Hey, I'm new to this group but needing help and support to lose weight for IVF. I have to lose 6 stone and I've never been at that BMI since being a child. Has anyone got any tips they would share to help please?

Hi Anonymous29 and welcome to our weight loss support community. Firstly I suggest that by setting yourself smaller, weekly goals your end goal would appear far less daunting.

This is the link to our pinned posts where you will find everything that we have available.

I suggest you read and contribute to the Daily Diary and participate in a Weekly Weigh in.

You will find there's loads of tips about better eating, from other members. Sharing your daily menu not only helps you stay committed, it can help other members too.

Good luck I hope to "see " you around.

Hi and welcome. Lots of support, helpful tips and things to join in with on here but have you also considered joining a slimming group such as weightwatchers. You have such a great incentive to succeed in losing but you might find the added ’personal’ support helpful -I’m not affiliated to weightwatchers but I did have a good experience of losing quite a bit of weight with them some years ago. Just a thought and if its not for you then join in on here. Hope you find something helpful.

Thank you, I'll have a look into weight watchers. I've got all the motivation in the world but struggling with the discipline at the moment so thank you for the suggestion x

Hi Anonymous, whichever way you choose to tackle this, I would suggest to think around how the extra weight got there. I’d bet a pound to a penny that sugar was the culprit, in different forms it gets added to practically every item on a supermarket shelf, it’s very hard to avoid and easy to crave more. It will be hard to cut down on it to start with because it’s like an addiction, but well worth it if you see the lbs starting to shift. My best tip would be to try to buy and cook fresh food, avoid processed where you can, read labels for the carb content and especially the line: “of which sugars”. Even small changes to start with should hopefully show results. Good luck, especially with your final goal.

If you do manage to improve your diet and loose the weight you might not need IVF as bad diets can often lead to fertillity problems. Processed food is not only high in sugar but is also low in nutrients. If you partner is also overweight a bad diet will also affect his fertillity.

Thank you for the advice. There are health reasons that cause my fertility issues which are unrelated to being overweight so IVF is our only option x

I think you need to redirect your response to the original poster rather than to me (although actually I DO need to improve my diet too 😀)

Sorry, I don't know what happened there but Anonomous29 has got the message.

Whatever you do it will take time - don't try to lose weight too fast -I would think 6 stone or about 36kg would take anyone 9-12 months to lose - You have to be patient and the results will come.

Hello! I’m not a professional or expert, but I’m going through a bit of a weight loss journey myself for different reasons.

I’ve found that starting out I had to work on my mentality first and once you’ve done that, the journey will become a lot easier. Don’t get me wrong, I found that first part really hard, and still do! Starting off with small goals also helps and surrounding yourself with likeminded people gives you emotional and mental support.

Forming habits is a must and they can take some time to develop if you’re strict with yourself and are consistent. For example, if you’re a person that drinks 5 cups of tea a day with milk and two sugars, either swap to herbal tea or cut the sugar out. Another example could be that you go for a walk for 30min every day at the same time no matter the weather. Start small and then move on to bigger goals. I see a personal trainer at her home gym, and even she stresses the importance of small goals and habits. Weight loss is a marathon not a sprint and before you know it, looking after yourself and staying active will become a lifestyle.

If you have someone like a friend or family member to do this alongside with, I would highly recommend!

There are also online support groups and diet programmes you could join. Your GP can also refer you to a diet program and give you advice if you ask.

I realise how long this comment is and I could go on haha. I hope you find something that works for you and you see the fruits of your labour :) good luck!

Thank you, really appreciate your response! I just massively lack consistency. I can go weeks with eating and exercising well, I lose weight and have a treat and then get into such a bad habit of continuing with the treats. Need to find a balance somehow. But you're definitely right about working on my mentality so going to be focusing on that at the moment. Good luck to you too x

Totally get that! Finding a balance is important because if you try to do everything all at once in the beginning, you’ll find it overwhelming and will fall back to old habits because it’s what you know. Hope that makes sense!
