Hello WalkmorePJ and welcome to this Forum! This part of HealthUnlocked might also assist you in relation to cholesterol issues,

Your GP has presumably also given you advice?
You will have been sent a Welcome post on registration with the Weight Loss Forum which gave you advice and guidance on how to navigate this site.
Here's a reminder link to that Site Guide.

There's a lot there but it's worth taking your time to read, honest!
We recommend that to support members with weight loss they join a Weekly Weigh-In, on the day of your choice, and also use the Daily Diary, where members share their meal plans and get useful feedback.
A special feature of our Forum is the degree of support between members which you will experience (and add to yourself !) as you join in and chat with others.
All the best on your weight-loss journey ! 😊
Thank you for the help.
The site is usually quiet at this time but you'll find it more active tomorrow mid-day and will get more response then. If you're still about have a look at this Sunday's Daily Diary page here to see how people chat and share ideas with eachother

Walkmore,
Welcome!
we are in the same boat-I am looking forward to getting lighter and feeding better with you!
Hi Walkmore and welcome
Take your time and each small change will help and be another step towards a healthier you.
To help with focus think about using one of the Weekly Weigh-ins and the Daily Diarys.
Good luck!
Thanks. I did not know there was a weekly weigh in. That will really help me to be accountable to myself. 😀
Yes, the weigh in keeps me motivated and mindful of what I eat. Today I turned down licorice allsorts at work( I love licorice - but my weigh in is Thursday!
Good morning WalkmorePJ . Your goals sound very doable. You are already making positive moves by setting healthy goals and by reaching out so start to feel better about yourself. Good luck.
Hi and welcome to this forum. I started to lose weight because of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My GP told me to stop even drinking decaf tea and coffee as they still contain some caffeine. I drink first thing in the morning a spiced ginger tea and the rest of the time drink redbush tea sometimes called rooibos which does not have any caffeine in it at all. Treat it just like tea with milk . Always have a few redbush tea bags in my bag . Have a tub of them at my daughters and my friend has bought a box of redbush specially for me. I then eat lots of fresh fruit and veg. I have cut red meat out almost completely and most of the time eat chicken and twice a week have fish. As my weight came down so did the blood pressure and my cholesterol halved. Due to family history I am on a statin and take tablets for high blood pressure but feel so much better. Haven’t had a cup of coffee for over two years now and don’t miss it. I wish you all the best on your weight loss journey for your health. An admin will have told you all about this forum so hope you will join in a weigh in day etc.
Have a lovely week Sue
Wow Sue, thanks for this lovely message. It really is helpful. It has inspired me to just try. It has given me some hope that I can do this without medication to begin with. Have a good week to Paul.
Hi Paul you will get lots of support and encouragement from everyone here as we have been where you are now. Today is the Monday Mass Movers group which you can access from 9pm Sunday till 9 pm Monday . Every day has their own name for the weigh in group. The admin team will have sent you info to read through which will take you ages and a few goes at reading it, it took me ages but suddenly it all clicks into place. If you are stuck don’t be afraid to ask and someone will help you out. Hope you have a good week Sue
Thanks Sue. Looking forward to loosing the weight. Shall look forward to the reading.
Hi Paul
If this any help to you I have always counted calories , weighed everything and written it down and still do after just over two years. When on holiday obviously can’t take scales into hotel dining room but my husband is excellent at guessing how much I should eat . He eats the same food as I do except he doesn’t like fish so one day has a small chicken pie and the other day has quiche . The rest of the week we have chicken.
Can’t think about eating lots of fats as my gastritis would flare up like mad and then I have medication to take for a total of three months at a time. Whatever you chose to do it is not a diet but a way of eating healthily for really the rest of your life.
Good luck Sue
My husband similar as has TIA in his eye . He has done well cutting out processed meats so no bacon , sausage , a lot of cooked meats in packs . No hard cheese but healthy fats from fish and he still has a yogurt and semi skimmed milk in porridge . More fruit , veg , limited bread and he eats a handful of unsalted nuts and sugar cravings = a handful of sultanas or grapes . We have cut out red meat but will have the occasional pork medallion served with veg cous cous or a large salad with beans such as chickpeas or a tin of mixed just drained and rinsed straight out the the tin . He has brown rice , pasta , limited potato but we like sweet potato .
He has lost 11kg in 3 months with little effort . He was never heavy but is now about 74kg and 6 ft tall . He feels healthier and that barrel tummy is now flat .
Hi, WalkmorePJ , welcome.
If you "slim smart" weight loss is not so hard! It is not all about motivation and masochism.
Some of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:

Hi and thanks for the links and advice. There is so much info here it is going to take me some time to get to grips with it. Low Carbs good but high fat may be an issue as I have high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I am looking at the forums for more advice. Thanks again.
This forum will be able to give you much more specific advice as to how lchf may or may not be a fit for you... healthunlocked.com/lchf-diet
I am smiling at the amount of info that's been thrown at you. Like you say, a fair bit to get to grips with.
Good luck!
Hi and welcome look at what admin will send you and jump on in. Joining in a weigh day will give you a lot of support and you've got a good incentive to get healthier. Take it slowly but surely and you'll get there
