Welcome

This is an amazing forum to be part of. Many of people on here have different areas of concern but we are all trying to get to, or maintain, our desired weight. As you get to know us, and share experiences with us, you will find what a super supportive bunch we are, and that we don't pass judgements.

Here are a few suggestions about how to get the most out of the forum.

The first place to look is at the Pinned Posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news; and you will have important news to share with us.

Have a look at the NHS 12-week plan; many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This can be a major turning point, realising you can eat anything as long as the calories are accounted for and are within your personal limit.

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate; that happens to me quite regularly!

The forum also has group weigh-ins every day, just choose which day you wish to weigh, join the post for that day and weigh in once per week. The Daily Diary is a very useful thread where we post our planned menu for the day, including calories if you count them, any exercise you have planned and any tips that you can share. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page.

If you just want to chat, to say hello, or share any news or struggles then look out for the What's Happening Today thread. There are many other challenges to get involved with, just choose to do what you are comfortable with and feel free to join as many, or as few as you wish.

The grey box next to people's names are achievement badges, and as a new member of the community you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, you need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration, and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here regularly.

If you are using the new HU App on your mobile phone (helpful for when you are out and about), many of features mentioned are not available; use the full website version to maximise your experience.

If you have any questions please just ask. The more you join in and connect with people the more you get out of the forum.

I wish you well as you get started with a new lifestyle.

Hi and welcome cocosgirl18

You will be in good company here, that's for sure!

I don't know anything about Hashi's, but from what I just read, your immune system attacks your thyroid :-(

Are you on any kind of thyroid medication to combat the partial thyroidectomy?

There are quite of us here who have some sort of additional barrier to losing weight easily - but the great thing is, it's entirely possible but some of us will have to put in an extra bit of effort :-( either being aware of the side-effects of medication (increased appetite) or lack of mobility because of injury or disability.

I started my weight loss journey at 14 stone - 5 and a half years ago. I was 49 years old and had been trying to lose weight all of my life since the age of 9.

I started my journey at the end of February 2012, and managed to lose 4.5 stone in 2 and a half years through calorie counting and logging/weighing all of my food.

Then re-gained some, lost some again and have now managed to more or less maintain for the past 6 months.

BUT... ideally I would love to drop another stone and maintain there.

I have a disability which makes exercise difficult, but the one thing that I realise very early on in my journey was that I was just eating FAR TOO MUCH! I was a short, middle aged, sedentary female and I was eating the same as 5ft 9" active man (my now husband!).

No wonder I was piling on the weight!

Here are a few of my past posts which I hope you will find helpful and inspiring. I won't try and tell you that my journey was easy - and you'll see that there were many blips along the way, but 5 years down the line, I feel about 20 years younger than I did when I was lugging around 4 stone more.

Please do pop back to the forums and share your journey with us - we are here for you, day and night and happy to share your success or support you when you need it.

Thanks very much for your reply Pineapple27, much appreciated.

Yes I'm on meds-thyroxine sodium -for the past 22 years ( unfortunately not straight after surgery as I was not initially diagnosed... until I started asking questions after 8 months & gaining 20 kg(!)

I was 70 kg at surgery ( am 176 cm/5 ft 9 so not short... but I blew up to 90kg in 8 months & didn't have a clue what was going on (& no advice either).

I had my surgery in the UK as I was living there at the time, but my diagnosis was not given until almost 2 yrs later, after my Melbourne GP sent me off for an antibody test.

I too have found I have tended to eat too much, but nmore because of not having much of a thyroid gland at all and now getting older ( am in my 50's).

I am now down to 1000-1200 caliries p/day max. Low-no carbs, fat & sugar...& a little protein to feed my muscles & balance my appetite means I don't enjoy food as much any more.

I have a moderately active lifestyle with lots of walking, gardening & sometimes swimming, yet have never lost that 20kg(!).

So my 'real' figure is still buried under extra layers of fat which I hate!

I have come to the conclusion that the medical professiin knows very little about the effect of not having a thyroid gland...( well the bit that's left is 0.5% functional according to my endocrinologist).

It's nice to hear that you're succeeding in your weight loss.

I am feeling quite disheartened at the moment as 'middleAaged spread' is trying to take over...& I'm not giving i ! The battle is still on & will be won!

Good luck & keep up the good fight!

Thank you for this further explanation. To hear that you don't really enjoy food any more seems so sad. I absolutely love everything about food, love cooking and am rather obsessed - but have turned that to my advantage!

Your diet sounds similar to what I am doing - 1,100 calories for continued weight loss. I appreciate first hand just how difficult that is to remain within!

One thing that I do - and this is just a suggestion. I don't have breakfast. That saves me a good 200 - 400 calories a day which I can then use to boost lunch and dinner. BUT I know that some people would say they are unable to do this and indeed, cannot do this as they have medication to take which needs to be taken with food.

I find that if I eat breakfast (8-9am) I am starving again by 10.30/11am! If I don't eat anything until lunchtime, I'm fine. Not worked that one out. I will drink plenty of tea and a coffee before midday though!

I know.... I really do know, how easy it is to go over the calorie allowance for weight loss. At such a low allowance, there is no room for bread, chocolate, cake.... but I cannot live without those things!

I did do the Blood Sugar Diet for 7 weeks last October - have you heard of it? If you search for it alongside "Michael Mosley" you'll find details. It's basically cutting out processed carbs (pasta, bread, rice, flour, grains) increasing "good fats", and sticking to 800 calories for 8 weeks. It also tries to encourage you to be aware of snacking, and to break the habit - not to eat outside of meal times. That was a real eye opener, especially for me in the evenings, as that is clearly when I am able to do a lot of damage!

I did it for 7 weeks as I was on holiday for the 8th. I managed to lose 13lbs (5.9kg) in those 7 weeks which i was really happy with, as I don't have a huge amount to lose, and struggle so much to lose even a pound! I lost 2.7lbs the first week alone!

I found I could do it as it was just for a set period of time. I chose the time when I didn't have many social engagements, etc. I made several packed lunches during that time to ensure I could stick to it!

I have an underactive thyroid and at the beginning managed to lose weight then tablets change and I gained heaps. I looked at the internet and read how people struggled with weight etc and thought well I just going to end up a big fat blob. And sure enough I gained and gained but then I found this web site and discovered that we too can lose weight with the right mind set. Of course it is a litte harder and we have to work harder but believe me it does work. Since being here I have lost 4lbs doesnt sound much but for me its great. But its through the great support of everyone on here. I feel obligated when I weigh in and really make an effort before and hey I have had my down days but feel more encouraged than ever before. You can only try:)

I also have a diagnosis of Hashimoto, but a very mild version and i never had to take any medication. I also dont have any particular simptoms but I do think it affects my metabolism and makes it a bit harder for me to lose weight. Or maybe its just my lack of discipline in this field, Im not sure :)
