I realise that you're feeling very down about your inability to lose weight, ForestryPine6, but you've asked the same question numerous times over the last 2.5 years and have been given lots of advice, but are still doing the same thing you were doing then, expecting a different outcome. Exercise is great for health and well-being, but it shouldn't be relied on for weight loss, that needs to be addressed by changing your eating habits.

You also have lymphoedema, are pre-diabetic and have subclinical hypothyroidism. A side-effect of beta blockers and mirtazapine is weight gain. You'll need to get your GP onboard to get these medical issues resolved if you are to have any chance of losing weight effectively.

I suggest you look back on your past posts to see where you can make changes to your diet.

Thanks for taking the time to reply in full, I've seen numerous GPS at my surgery and took on board what they've said for last 8 year's but I'm still the same weight. GP is happy with the fact that I'm not putting on weight consistently and I'm staying around 145 to 149 kgs, that's not helpful, Yes I've asked on here before but not getting anywhere! I'm wondering if I'd lose weight when I pass away lol, Yes I'll go back on your link, and be open minded, but don't realistically hold out any hope, I've been to slimming world and other programme's nothing is working, I've seen nutrients Dietetics person, Yes I'm on here again because I'm hitting a brick wall, really don't know what else I can do apart from not eating and just drinking water, I'm fed up of posting as much as your probably fed up of me coming back on here again, I'm stuck on a roundabout and can't get off.

Honestly Rob, you need to go low carb. I believe it's the only thing that's going to make a difference.

Carbohydrates make you retain fluid - not good for your lymphoedema.

Too many carbohydrates lead to Type 2 diabetes.

Carbohydrates can lead to feeling hungry and experiencing food cravings.

Slimming World and dieticians stick to low calorie/low fat diets, which have obviously not worked for you.

Being overweight is depressing. Taking the necessary steps to lose the weight may lead to you not needing a drug that makes you gain weight.

You need to forget all you've learnt before and start again with a fresh and positive outlook.

You can do this and we can help if you work with us :)

A big thank thank you, so it's no bread, pasta, potatoes is that what your saying or limit them moreless ๐Ÿ‘

I have been low carb for nearly 9 years now, I don't eat bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar (in any form). After over 40 years of yoyo dieting, it was the only way I could lose over 100lbs and maintain the loss. I don't feel hungry, or deprived, the way I used to on low calorie/low fat diets.

If I can do it, so can you :)

That's a fabulous positive reply, so I get that there is a way to lose like you've done brilliantly in that huge weight loss, I'm wondering is there a guide as to what I can eat to replace cards, is there a chart or link that I can work from I wonder? I definitely need a new direction so will start this low carbon as I remember an acquaintance he cut out carbs about 15 year's ago he was type 2 and lost 4 1/2 stone, fresh outlook and advice given by yourself take on board ๐Ÿคž

Funnily enough I've never eat at breakfast just 2 mugs of tea, Am I ok to continue tea in morning. Thanks for valued advice as I've tried almost everything to lose weight Eryl ๐Ÿคž

Eryl profile image

Yes as long as you take it without sugar because half of table sugar is fructose which is the driver of fat storage and hunger

ForestryPine6 profile image
ForestryPine6Restart April 2024 in reply to Eryl

I've always used 2 sweeteners for each mug of tea, is that ok or stop the sugar Eryl ๐Ÿค”

Eryl profile image

Some people say that artificial sweteners are bad but I'm not sure. Just make sure that you don't eat table sugar and don't eat exceptionally sweet fruit like seedless grapes. Stick to berries if you can because they tend to be lower in fructose. I stick to half a cup of blueberries per day as they are also high in antioxidants which fiight the inflammation caused by insulin.

Yes, look on youtube for a video called "is fruit good or bad for you?" by Garry Fettke.

As a coincidence this video just popped up on my feed and I heard that artificial sweeteners tend to reatain water which won't help you loose weight. youtu.be/L6CAaRRxoFU?si=dZR...

Fruit isn't bad as it contains lots of vitamins, however, if you're aiming to go low carb/low sugar, fruit does have a lot of natural sugar. It's best to stick with a small serving of berries and no fruit juice as has already been mentioned.

I found going very low carbs very difficult at first, so instead, thought of carbs as a garnish... so for example, just a tiny amount of pasta, around a dessert spoonful. Then a lot more vegetables on the plate. This helped me transition to eating less carbs.

Good luck!

Thanks for input SummerDark I agree going low carbon is really tough when going to gym as carbs I think did help but more habitual than anything else, but I've made a start lots of veg and I'm not a fruit juice fan luckily although enjoy a blackcurrant soda water with ice on a summer's day, not sure if that's ok? It's needed a drastic transition of eating as I've tried most everything else to lose weight and exercise isn't doing it although it makes me feel fitter the scales hovver between 145 kgs to 149 kgs the highest being 153 kgs, up until 2017 with the workouts I do I would have lost the weight, it could be a multitude of things anyway it's really helpful the support I have on here and thanks again ๐Ÿ‘Œ

The jury's out on the pros and cons of using artificial sweeteners healthline.com/nutrition/ar...

My personal opinion is that they're better than sugar, as a temporary measure, but if possible they should be reduced until no longer required. You'll probably find that your sweet tooth will disappear after going low carb and they'll become a thing of the past :)

ForestryPine6 profile image
ForestryPine6Restart April 2024 in reply to moreless

In my younger year's I didn't use sweetners so I guess it's habit now, it won't take a lot of effort for me to bin them as I will when having coffee this afternoon after gym and this as started my low carb as ain't tried that before, thanks for taking the time to reply moreless ๐Ÿ‘Œ

I had the same problem that I was dieting for a couple of years and just could not make the weight go. I did the gym and although I toned up and lost a dress size - the actual weight still did not come off. I am on beta blockers, bp tablets and blood thinners. One day I decided to do a fast and only had water and green tea for majority of day and some fruit at 6pm. Rest of week I ate like I normally do - end of week, I lost 2lb . I was so thankful! Now the weight seems to budge, sometimes I think it is just a case of confusing your body. I donโ€™t know your history - so obviously check with a GP if you decided to try this.

ForestryPine6 profile image
ForestryPine6Restart April 2024 in reply to Anxiousarabella

Thanks for taking the time to give your own input experience, I'll take that on board, my GP to which I don't have a specific doctor will simply say do what I think but safely, they seem to be okay with my weight staying around the 148 kg mark, yes I'm 188 cm tall 6ft 2" in height with a bmi of 142 which is severely obese, I've got my height to thank that I don't look worst as it's staying consistent, but if I couldn't train my weight be desperate. him I would balloon as currently 148 kg which I'd like to get down to 115 kg, I'll give this a go? ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Anxiousarabella profile image

Yes do give it a go - itโ€™s really worth it when your weight gets stuck for a long time. I think it confuses your body and gets your metabolism going again. Good luck.

Definitely worth giving the low carb a go. I just wanted to add a couple of things from my own ( generally positive) experience of low carb. Firstly donโ€™t be surprised if you donโ€™t get that big loss on the first week that people often experience with other diets, donโ€™t be disheartened. Secondly you might want to include some vegetables like chick peas or beans, ( not the ones in tomato sauce!) lentils, seeds, to keep youโ€™re digestive system moving -these will have some carbs but mostly in the form of fibre. And thirdly donโ€™t be surprised if your energy levels at the gym drop a bit, it does take your body a bit of time to adjust, maybe 3 or 4 weeks , just slow down a bit until you do. Hope that helps.
