I'm new on here, I hope you guys can help! I am sick of being overweight and I've tried dieting but I can never stick it out😩 I'm 18 and my BMI is 40 so I'm very very overweight. Do you have any tips on how to stick at a diet or tips for a diet? Thanks in advance!

Hello Tm148 and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum

Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask

Best wishes

Anna

Hi and Welcome TM148.

I've found that diets are no good. You do something restrictive for a short period of time and then go back to what you were doing (which was the problem anyway!) and all the weight piles back on. What I needed was to completely rethink not just what and how I was eating but my health in general. I (fortunately) have always been in pretty good health, but weight paired with a lack of exercise has been a problem. The NHS 12-week plan works really well for me as it's essentially retraining me to think, eat, and act for a healthy lifestyle all together. If you haven't yet had a look, I would really recommend it.

I have also recently started using My Fitness Pal online to track my calories. I found it quicker and easier to calculate my calories than the pencil and paper method I was using. I also like that it's free. ;)

But however you do it, I would highly suggest throwing away the idea of "dieting" and just trying to improve your lifestyle with a healthy diet and exercise. The trick is you have to be able to sustain it for life, hence the lifestyle! :) Any sort of fad "diet" isn't sustainable for the long term.

Good luck and we'll all be rooting for you. :D

Hi Tm148

You've joined the best forum there is to help you on the your way.

The 12 week NHS plan is a good starting point. Keep your goals small. If you can, go for a walk every day as it really does help you to get fit and think healthy eating rather than dieting.

Hope you have a good week.

hi,

stay strong, cut back slowly,iv just started my diet,i need to lose alot as well, keep in touch,we can support each other

I agree with the others. Take the word 'diet' out of your vocabulary and replace it with 'healthy eating'. You won't go far wrong then.

Hi also make sure you eat the right amount of calories that the NHS bmi calculator tells you to eat to lose weight. When I first joined I was eating less than I should and was not losing weight but was told on here that this was why I wasn't losing weight. If you don't eat the amount it tells you to your body thinks that you are trying to starve it and holds on to everything you eat and turns it into body fat. This is heavier than eating the extra calories so means you don't lose weight and sometimes put weight on instead. When I found this out I upped my calories to the right amount of calories and I have now lost 2st. Please don't make this same mistake as I had been doing this for years. Good luck with your journey on here.
