Weight Gain

I am 59.5 years old. I have been ill health retired for the last year and half. Since last February I have gained 2 stone and really don't know what to do. I have attended two different slimming clubs but nothing seems to work. My problem is that I have an underactive thyroid, but main problem is that I am a coeliac. I don't eat a lot of meat, but like veg and fruit, eggs, fish.

Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Judith,

Welcome😃 Have you had a look at the 'newbie' pack on the 'Pinned Post ' page ?. It's full of all kinds of info to get you started😃

I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid some months ago and while it is hard it's doable. I don't know much about coeliac but if following the 12 week plan it is up to you what you eat, you just need to count calories and if you can move more.

It was suggested to me months ago that when watching TV get up and move when the adverts are on, it might sound daft but it is a bit of moving 😃

Enjoy your week

😇

Hi, thank you, I haven't yet but will take a look later on. The thyroid I've had for about 20 years now, but the coeliac since 2007. I didn't find my doctor very helpful on this subject actually, I was told I had to get used to my new shape. It just seems to have developed over the last year.

But thanks it's nice to know i'm not alone. :)

How unhelpful!!! If you feel up to it I would go back and ask for a referral to a dietician 😕

It's difficult to know if the weight gain is due to coeliacs or retirement 😕 My coeliac friends all eat all the time, I think maybe it's a symptom of the desease!!

Either way, if you are gaining weight it could be hormonal but unfortunately smaller portions is the best way to lose it. Have a look at the links suggested by Rob and moreless, work out you calorie target and give it a go 😊 Good luck ,

Thanks Anna, I really expected a little support even if she couldn't do anything for me. Yes I'll have a look today.

Hi Judith47, You are never alone, when you have us here. Many of us have health issues, and struggle with our weight. I have tried to "diet" all my life, ive lost only to more back on each time. In May i found Healthunlocked, and its great. There's always someone to pull you up if you have a blip, give advice when you need it, and encourage you to carry on. I have found the way forward is to look at this differently as a diet. Think of it as a change of lifestyle. Good luck

Thankyou I will. I'll have a look at the weigh in then, that might help as well. Even if it was a little bit it would be something right now.

Hi Judith

If you are on medication for your thyroid condition, I wonder if it needs adjusting? I'm sorry your doctor wasn't helpful, some certainly don't seem to know much about food and diets in general.

I also have to avoid gluten. I also make sure to avoid most of the ready-made gluten free foods in the supermarket, as they are often loaded with sugar, and other additives that upset me.

Over our lifetimes our metabolisms can alter, counting calories may work for you or you may need to change what you eat. Cutting down on carbohydrates and increasing protein is recommended as we age. I've cut out all sugar and processed carbs, I now eat things like a little sweet potatoes or quinoa rather than pasta or bread.

Good luck with finding what works for you.

Good point about reducing carbohydrates, I still eat about 4-6 oz a day but prefer to eat them at breakfast and lunch, having a lighter, vegetable based evening meal 😊

Having experimented with eating carbs I have found that I need to eat some with my evening meal to help me sleep!

Interesting . . . I'm much better with a lower amount but struggle to go any less than 150g 😊 On the other hand I've had a homemade 'cookie' today, (i rarely eat any sugar) really feeling it 😕 Loads of hot flushes 😕 Mind you it is quite warm out so it could be that!! On the plus side it was a very nice cookie!! Grand Marnier and Choc chunk 😊

Thanks all, its nice to know I'm not the only one, you can feel very alone at times. I haven't weighted myself this week, I usually go by my clothes. I went for a long walk yesterday with the dog, by the time I got home I was so hot and red faced, not good. I'm still hanging in there though. I rarely eat meat these days, seem to have gone off it as I've got older. Not a vegie though. Hope you all have a good week.
