Odd weight gain?

Diana profile image

Gained weight last weight, after previously losing 3lb, I gained 1 1/4 , its a total mystery, as I've been good, don't do monthlies any more, I'm upset and annoyed, and yet follow a good 1500 cal plan, never happened beforehand?

Any ideas, I'm livid

Any nibbling? Also sometimes if you do too much exercise muscle weight comes on

I suspect it may be a few walnuts, which I thought I had included ok, seems not, onwards and up wards and all that

You could have been dehydrated when you weighed the previous week.

You could be retaining water this week.

Are you weighing at the same time of day each week, in the same state of dress?

Are you using digital or analogue scales to weigh, analogue scales can be more susceptible to temperature changes (is it very cold) due to their mechanisms.

Yes I weigh myself, with no clothes on same time same day, I have digital scales so no fooling myself.

I normally keep a diary, so it's all a bit strange, although sleeping badly too.

I am the same - I started back on a strict low calorie, low carb diet 2 weeks ago and started back at the gym and exercise class and still weigh the same after 2 weeks. Gutted!!! I have definitely lost inches though because a pair of trousers that didn't fit me before Christmas, fit now - so I may stop weighing myself and just concentrate on body changes :)

Any ideas re this??

Hi yes I found this as well. Going to try and stop focusing on the weight and write down inchloss. After all it is what you look like in clothes not what the scales say.

I feel just the same, I don't tend to measure myself tho

It could be hormonal, last time I dieted I put a small amount on every fourth week or had a smaller loss than usual. Keep an eye on it see if a pattern emerges.

Thanks, I seemed to bloat on Fri and yet it's never vanished oddly enough, I thought / hoped all my hormone dramas were over?!

Hi Unfortunatley weight loss often doesn't happen in a predictable way especially if you have lost a reasonable amount of weight !

basically your body adjusts to the food & exercise that you give it - so your body has adjusted to the 1500 calories and your exercise regime so you need to shake it up !

either drop to 1200 calories for a week ( no more) and/or increase your exercise - you will lose weight!

also write down everything you eat - food diary is my saviour- check portion sizes and really make sure you are eating the calories you think you are !

lastly be patient if you follow a healthy eating plan and a good exercise regime you will lose weight

good Luck

I thought plateau would hit, it wasn't even that, a gain, I guess it's not that big a deal

Im 62 so I cant blame monthly hormones either! Ive kept mostly under 1400 cals over the 8 months , I had 27lb to lose and Ive lost 23lbs, BUT lots of weeks stayed the same or weight went up a pound or two. Dont despair there are lots of reasons. Just be sure that 1500 is not too much for your current weight ( your BMR changes along the way) I use the myfitnesspal app for calculating my target, progress, net calories, and as long as the graph shows an overall downward trend you'll be fine.

Me too!! I have lost 21 kg since beginning Aug - slowly and steadily- and now, in the last week, I have PUT ON 1 kilo!! I stuck to just below 1200cal per day (average 1197 per day) and have changed nothing! I hope it is water retention.

Desperately hoping that next time I'll have enough of a loss to make up for this shock!

If not I could maybe go to 1100 but I'll have to get permission from GP first ;-( - no wonder people get despondent when trying to loose weight!

Two possibilities. 1) I just found out that digital scales don't like being cold or standing on a cushioned floor so maybe move them to a warmer room with a solid floor. 2) on the Horizon programme last week they discussed this and it seems your body gets used to you being a certain weight, when you cut down your calories etc. you lose weight but after a while your body notices what's going on and automatically wants to take you back up to where you used to be so it adjusts itself (they didn't explain how it did that ;-? but basically you have to cut your calories down a little more, also, when you started to diet your calorie intake was based on you being X amount of weight but you weigh less now so you need less calories (does any of that make sense?).

I watched the whole thing, the stupid thing is I've been down to 10st 8, now 10st 12, I know I need a high protein low carb diet, may nibbles are my downfall, I think I failed to realise how many of them there were, and under estimated, before I was just stricter, that's what I've got to do

Try googling 'adaptive thermogenesis' which explains how your body adapts to the calories you are eating. This will keep happening, and the idea that you have to keep reducing calories is crazy, how many times can anyone do that! It's a better idea to change what you are eating: try low GI, or reduced carbs. It's not all about the calories.

The book "Fat Chance" by the American obesity expert Robert Lustig gives a good explanation on how food affects our body.

Thanks I'll check it out, I know all foods and calories are not equal, based on blood type diet, it's a hard one to handle

I don't know about a blood type diet, but this is one helpful post from Robert Lustig.

You should have a look at the recent bbc horizon programme on ' tailored diets' - what they found ( and its quite common) as you change you dietary input.. in the early few weeks you lose quickly ( a lot of it mostly water) then the loss can slow down/ even reverse after a few weeks as the body ' adapts ' to your new regime.. but if you CONTINUE.. you find after a while you have lost weight and are closer to where you wanted to be.. ( so long as you are looking at reasonable weight loss?) it is long term you have to look.. NOT week to week gains or losses.. stick with it!! ( hope this helps?)

in MY case I know i seem to undergo a 'step change' stays the same for weeks on end then suddenly make a BIG leap and changes...
