weight gain: i stopped smoking 3 years... - Weight Loss Support
weight gain
Welcome back, Topgear1
I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling a bit down, but you've come back to just the right place. Smoking acts as an appetite suppressant and may slightly increase your metabolism as well. When you quit smoking, your appetite and metabolism return to normal, which may lead you to eat more and burn fewer calories. You managed to quit the cigs and if you stick with us I'm sure we can help you lose those excess pounds.
All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts
healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.
We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.
Wishing you all the best
Hi Topgear1, firstly well done for quitting! I'm afraid that a slight weight gain is part of quitting. I managed to gain one and a half stone and I was being careful!
One of the problems is spare time. When we smoke we waste a whole lot of time and money. It's been 3 years now so I suggest you stop blaming quitting and follow the advice that moreless has given you. I find following the daily diary to be really helpful , you will find lots of tips for healthy eating.
Good luck with your weight loss journey, I hope to"see"you around.🍀
Hi Topgear1,
another ex-smoker here and piled on the pounds after I quit.
You kind of line yourself up for a triple whammy when you quit - your appetite increases, your metabolism drops and you probably crave unhealthy food (chocolate for me).
Good to see you here as sounds like you now want to deal with your weight. You can do it and you will find plenty of good ideas. I recommend cutting down on refined carbs.
Best of all you have done your body a big favour by quitting the cigarettes and when you can get to your ideal weight you have given yourself the best chance of a long and healthy life.
All the best and look forward to hearing from you here
Good luck Topgear1 I think of it as a long term journey now it’s not go on a diet lose some weight then think I can eat and drink the same things I had before.
I havent drank beer for nearly five months though I’ve had wine and shorts.
I am following a low carb high fat diet and intermittent fasting. I’ve lost two stone with two stone to lose and feel so much better for it.
I cycle a lot for exercise.
My blood pressure cholesterol and blood sugars are all back to normal they were all high I was nearly 15 stone. I am 66 years old.
People will help you and support you here answer questions and offer advice. Good luck with your new way of living and your weight loss journey.
Kind regards
Jeff
thankyou for your reply.I think its time to make some changes
I too gained weight after I quit smoking. I gained 50 pounds. I grieved for my loss of cigarettes, felt tired and did not exercise. Finally, I decided I sick of being overweight. I began riding my bike 30 minutes a day and eat a low fat diet of around 1300 calories a day. I have lost 36 this year. It takes me longer to lose weight as am 56 years old. I’m still working to lose 25 more pounds. It gets harder and harder but I’ll keep working and get there eventually! You can do it too!
Me too I stopped smoking nearly five years ago and went up nearly two stone! I feel so much better without it but I am glad I am not letting myself get any bigger but as you just hit sixty, I know it will be harder to cut nice carbs now. It's going to be healthy eating every week except one weekend day when I may have one treat.
