I make my own granola with sunflower seeds and raisins. You can have it with milk or it's also nice with yogurt and fresh fruit or even some stewed apple.
I also love porridge with mashed banana mixed in. Don't know how you feel about porridge if you're having dry Weetabix?
At the weekends I make potato cakes or bubble n squeak and have it with a poached egg and beans. Tip for poaching eggs, lightly oil a piece of cling film in a bowl (eg spray with fry light), crack the egg into the cling film, twist it closed over the egg and drop into boiling pan of water for approx 4 mins. No faff!
You don't need to add vinegar if you're doing the cling film method. But yes the vinegar works a treat for normal poaching. I'm completely sold on the cling film method now though!
as a once fanatic of sunflower seeds I stopped eating them years ago as most of *esco's seeds, packet fruit etc. comes from china, and I am still a bit old-womanish about their use of lead in virtually everything they produce (chance of cross contamination).
I just checked my sunflower seeds, eek, indeed they're from China. I didn't know that about the lead, hopefully I'm not full of lead already! I normally get pumpkin seeds too, are they a better choice?
Similar to 2bFabnfit - wholewheat bagel, poached egg, half tin of tomatoes. Might sometimes have a quorn sausage and only have half the bagel.
Also sometimes have porridge, handful of almonds and a banana (in which case I have the bagel/egg/tomato for lunch).
I like to flash fry some thinly sliced mushrooms and then throw those and some low fat cheese into a 2 (or 3) egg omelette. Delish.
My other favourite thing at the moment is to mashup some avocado, persian feta (normal is fine) and chopped mint. Spread this on a piece of rye toast and top with a poached egg. Yum!
That being said my staple is usually a hifibre porridge sachet with 1 tbsp of peanut butter, a splodge of honey and a sprinkle of chia seeds. If you like peanut butter this is a great start to the day I have it probably 4 times a week and have done for at least 3 months.
Use natural (no salt or sugar added) peanut butter and a good quality honey. I really can taste the difference if I use a cheap honey.
Peanut butter and honey added to the shopping list, going to be sat in supermarket looking for a good brand but low calories ( will be worth the extra time tho)
Really excited to do the supermarket shop today, normally I dread it for many reasons but positive today
Look at meridian peanut butter, 100% peanuts with nothing else added. If it's not in the supermarket you'll def find it in Holland and Barrett or similar health food type places. It's not low calorie but you end up having less than you would with normal peanut butter, so the calorie saving comes that way. I think the same applies to honey. The cheap stuff is thin and tasteless, just adds a sweet flavour so you end up adding more than you need. It's counterintuitive but spending a quid more on a better quality version will mean you use it up more slowly, so it all works out cheaper and healthier in the end.
40g giant rolled oats porridge. Make with water. Microwave on high for 90 seconds, add a couple of spoons of 0% total yoghurt and slice some strawberries into it. I add Splenda for sweetness at this point.
Microwave again for a further 90 seconds.
The strawberries make this delicious. You can add berries of any kind Instead of strawberries or rhubarb stewed in Splenda.
Gives a great start to the day.
On some days I have a more protein breakfast. May seem strange to some but will have fish of any type with a poached egg and tomatoes. Will sometimes have a couple of homemade lean beef burgers with egg and fresh tomatoes. Will usually have raw spinach with these type of meals
Never thought of fish of beef burgers for breakfast, however I'm quiet liking the idea as It would probably keep me fuller for longer, I'm up early enough to make this kind of breakfast too. Hmmmm definitely something to think about trying
Hi what a great thread. I have porridge with fruit 4 times a week but I needed to finish up leftovers so I have just had a piece of cod and two tablespoons of rice, some butter beans from the fridge , tbs olive oil and huge handful of chopped greens from the garden - all stir fried together. I think that it is kedgeree or something like. Delicious.
Do you have a puritan streak? If yes, this should suit : Alpro plain soy yoghourt, oatbran/oatmeal, fresh grated ginger (loads!), chia seeds, fresh fruit.
I'm lucky enough to like porridge. Eggs etc... are good but I get hungry and look to pick and snack by 10.30 whereas with the mighty porridge it sees me through. The options are endless with what you can do with it....
