Breakfast ideas

Well I’m looking for breakfast ideas. I’m currently eating the overnight oats. I find it really tasty and quite filling.. but oats leave me hungry an hour after.. which I found out from the nurse is due to them being fast burning .. so I don’t fancy bacon and eggs every other morning.. and ideas please.. I have started healthy eating and initially I thought oh can’t be too bad but I don’t want to get bored of the same stuff

That's good advice from your nurse. I'd say variations on eggs, but then I'd be happy to have eggs every meal. Boiled, poached, scrambled, fried, baked, omelette, frittata, crustless quiche. Whatever additions you like: mushrooms, ham, chorizo, tomatoes, cheese, good meaty sausages, nuts, smoked haddock - and think about getting some green veg in, which you may not think of for breakfast but is well worth building in to each meal: spinach wilted in butter, courgette fried in olive oil, broccoli stir fried in oil.

You're probably pressed for time so think about batch cooking a couple of crustless quiches for freezing, either as a whole quiche or as minis, cooked in a muffin tin.

Have a look at the Daily Diary for ideas. That's where I first came across blue cheese and walnut omelette which is now a big favourite.

Nearly forgot: avocado

I always thought quiche is unhealthy.

It's kinda sad that these good old traditional foods have been labelled "unhealthy" for no apparent reason. True, the supermarket version probably has some dubious items in it - pasteurized bulk eggs, synthetic pastry shortening, maybe a dash of phosphates and nitrites - but what on earth is wrong with some eggs, vegetables, and cheese? It's tasty, it's convenient, it's natural, and it's filling. As BridgeGirl said, omit the crust and it'll help you lose weight too. What's not to like?

I am so sorry I never knew it was wrong to say it was unhealthy. I am still confused but never mind! All I was trying to say is tht I was a biut surprised to see that it is okay.

I wasn't accusing you of anything. I was just lamenting the fact that the media (or whoever it is that plants these ideas in our heads) are making the world a slightly less interesting place by branding random food items as unhealthy, just to fill up some column-inches.

You are so right I should already know that this forum only has very nice people here! I have a huge chip on my shoulder and I have to remember that you can all enjoy your cheese but I may not as it doesn't agree with me!

I love a crustless quiche . . . Not just because I cannot make pastry!!! Lol 🤣

Just line an 8” round time with baking paper and fill with 6 scrambled eggs plus whatever else you fancy, bake in a medium oven for 25-30 minutes 😊

Thanks so much for broadening my horizon! I always thought a quiche is with a base. I am learning!

Can you eat yoghurt?

bakersdozen profile image
bakersdozen in reply toS11m

No dairy and I try to cut eggs and red meat, sugar and yeast.

What were you thinking of?

TheAwfulToad profile image
TheAwfulToadVisitor in reply tobakersdozen

ohh ... it's not fun to have a dairy intolerance, so many nice things you can't have!

Why lose eggs and meat and yeast though? Most unprocessed foods are perfectly healthy. The risk is that if you cut things out for no good reason, you end up substituting things that are definitely unhealthy simply to fill your plate. The classic example was the (thankfully short-lived) scare about butter, when millions of people started eating margarine instead thinking it was "healthy". Then they actually did the research, and discovered trans-fats are a factor in heart disease, while butter is not. Oops.

You can always use the reduced fat cheese that most supermarkets sell

Sorry as far as I am concerned it is still dairy. Thanks!

My favourite breakfast is now a smoothie recipe that I find very filling and holds me to lunch. Do you have a good blender? It’s a weird recipe but I like it and it’s low carb and about 400 calories.

1 cup frozen berries

1 cup almond milk

1/2 avocado (fresh or frozen)

1/2 lemon

1/2 cup water

1 Tablespoon almond butter

1 Tablespoon chia seeds

1 Tablespoon hemp seeds

Blend 1 minute and drink immediately.

Do you have quick meals that you would eat for lunch or dinner? We are so set in our ways that we have certain foods at certain times of day - me included 😂. There’s no reason why you couldn’t have a salad for breakfast if you want to. 😊

in reply to

I could easily eat porridge for dinner 😂, but as a traditionalist I think it would be best to keep protein , two veg and possibly a carb . I think a salad would just be to cold to have at breakfast, but I could have it at brunch time perhaps ...

Have a great weekend

Hi Zelda! I love breakfast - it is my favourite meal of the day! Lately I have been hooked on bran flakes (the healthiest option of crunchy cereal...yummy!) to which I add chopped nuts. I love changing flavour, so I alternate the kind of milk I add to it! I love hazelnut milk, but also coconut or almond are fantastic!

I have also found some 'stuffed' bran cereals - with either blueberry or apricot jam. These are very tasty as well although a bit high on sugar.

I am not one to have salty food for breakfast - being southern European, we grow up having healthy sweets in the morning with our coffee, but if I have a chance and time I like a poached egg and some smoked salmon/ham with Ryvitas.

Hi Zelda 123. Just started this week had a really low day yesterday but that aside I love avocado - half a small one 45g of flesh is about 100 calories. Half covers 2 ryvita(70cal) v nicely with some lemon salt pepper. I have a kiwi(?) after that. I alternate that with overnight oats - have you tried adding a little cinnamon to change the flavour?
