Keeping a glass or bottle of water beside you at all times?

I find that when I'm bored or feelin peckish for sugar, I just get up and snack like mad; but if I have water by my side, I just fill myself up with that 0: ) I guess the best thing is just to not have any junk in the house what's so ever to tempt you : (

I'm too paranoid to walk down the crisp and chocolate aisle anyway incase people laugh so i never have any at my flat, it's just if I go back to my parents house..uhohhh

Hi and welcome.

I have only been here 4 days but its a very supportive group.

Can you tell us a little more about yourself.

Age?

Are you mobile?

Are you able to walk for at least 30 minutes a day?

How much do you weigh and how tall are you?

How much do you want to lose?

Have you exercised before and if so what kind of exercise?

Do you work full time, are you at home...?

Have you tried to lose weight before and if so what methods?

Are you on a tight budget - I am guessing so because of your slimming clubs comment?

Do you understand how to count calories?

Do you have a goal in mind e.g. a wedding or an event or something you want to achieve or or is this purely to get healthier ?

Sorry for the million questions but knowing this can help us help you :)

Phew yup that a few questions but yeah I get it.

Late 40's

Mobile

Walk most days for 30+ mins

Work full time but not active at work

Aim loose 28 pounds: that's all you get on that yet lol

Walking my main exercise, due to time

Tried many different methods of losing weight, last time slimming world, worked ok put crept back on

Yes I understand cals etc

Main reason for exploring this is motivation

I think that's all

Hi Hubbard,

The standard advice I give is;

1. Weight creeps up on almost all of us slowly over the years as we seem to burn off less energy as we get older

2. It sounds simple: less energy in, more energy out - but it is hard work, and it's work that you will have to keep doing!

3. The only surefire way of losing weight is to make sure you burn more energy than you consume. To do this you need to work out your calorie intake and compare this to what it needs to be for you to lose weight. Then you need to monitor your calorie intake honestly for a while, and think about how you are realistically going to reduce it in a way that is sustainable.

4. There are some little tips that may help such as: replacing unhealthy snacks (biscuits, cakes, crisps) with healthier alternatives (fruit, raw vegetables), eating smaller portions (it may help to get some smaller plates), not buying unhealthy foods in the first place, cutting down on processed food (ready meals), replacing 'white carbs' like white bread, white pasta, white rice etc with 'brown carbs' - wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, brown rice etc., still letting yourself have the occasional little treat, but smaller versions - so instead of having a bar of Dairy Milk when you fancy some chocolate, have a Freddo instead - but only one, and be sure you count it as part of your calorie intake.

5. Things that can help with exercising more include building it into your daily routine - doing little things like taking the stairs instead of the lift, getting off the bus a few stops earlier or cycling to work instead, walking instead of driving to the shop. The amount of exercise you have to do to burn off calories is quite a lot. Jogging for 15 minutes burns off about 100 calories, but a Mars Bar contains 450 calories. Best avoiding the Mars bar in the first place. I have taken up Parkrun (parkrun.com/) - this motivates me to get out of bed every saturday morning and go for a run - it also means I'm less likely to down 5 pints and a curry the night before! Maybe see if you can get a friend to start doing some sort of exercise with you every week?

I hope that has been of some use.

Thanks, I think that sound advice.

I need to be very honest with my self.

I always say it's not rocket science eat less move more, know what works for you and replace bad habits with good.

Afraid I aren't a runner but I used to walk for miles... Time to move it..

on McBee's point 4 - I have taken to eating things like fruit and nuts more slowly - really chewing properly - I was travelling this morning and grabbed a fruit salad from Pret - I only managed half of it before I was feeling full. I then had the rest mid morning. Feeling pleased with myself that I am starting to recognise when I have eaten enough. But I am only on day 4...

Me too I am starting over again having put on all the weight I lost. Please keep me accoutable and I will do the same for you. I plan to weigh in every Monday. I will cheer you on. Please check up on me to mske sure that I stick to it and maintain it this time

Day 1: first positive change

Get up earlier and increase morning walk...did 30mins

Tomorrow is a challenge as its Friday and usually the night I treat myself for surviving work!

in reply tohubbardhovis67

I teach and am on school holiday at moment. I went for a half hour brisk walk today , ( I am active in term time but not usually during holidays ) I like your get up early and increase morning walk. Well done! Do it again tomorrow! (I'm cheering for you! )

I think if set one goal a week we should get there. It will just become a new way of life and for me it will be in place before winter hits!

Same again tomorrow ☺️

in reply tohubbardhovis67

Well done! Keep going. I have decided to ALWAYS get off the bus one stop too soon and walk that but further. So doable so long as I allow myself enough time. Hoping to up that to 2 stops once comfortable with the one. Hopefully we can keep loving ourselves enough to get healthier. Keep up the good work !

Re Friday treats. No problem so long as you plan it into your weekly intake. ( that is save 500 calories by reducing Sunday to Thursday by 100 a day ) .. I sort of do the same by being strict most of the time but if I eat out I relax and enjoy the treat ( still mindful of what goes in my mouth avoiding fries etc). But allow myself things I don't at home.
