I have 6 stones to lose and at 2.someting pounds a week it will take me 'till Christmas. I am a 72 year old retired male and sedentry as I prefer. My knees are weak and I cannot stand swimming baths. What alternatives are there for peeps like me?

The only alternative is patience. Of course you can go on those fad diets (they are a couple pushed about on this forum) but you will find you will put the weight back on again and it will not do your health a favour. The best is to change your eating habits. the NHS weight loss program will teach you this. However it will also advise you to reach for small goals at a time. So to be sure, to be sure.... Be patient.

Maybe your local council or Ageuk have some fun exercise classes especially for older people - it would be social too. I have about 6 and a half stone to lose and if it comes off slowly at about 1lb a week then that will take over a year and a half! But I'm in it for the long haul - permanent sustainable lifestyle changes for the rest of my life -otherwise it will go back on again. If it comes off slowly it is more likely to stay off. Good luck.

Know how you feel, I am same age with about same weight to lose. Main exercise I get is walking my dog. Wish you luck.

Hi Jimand, welcome to the site and well done for joining us all, firstly 2llb a week is a good weightloss and attainable for many, some weeks you will lose more some weeks it will be less, there are also weeks where you will gain for one reason or another, the best tbing to do if you can is to keep a food diary so you can see where you went wrong if you do have a gain, you have to be strict with the diary and if it goes in your mouth WRITE IT DOWN, you will lose the weight, good luck and you can do it

Hi I have 7stone to lose and had both knees replaced last year I have lost 5pounds in two weeks by just cutting down my portion size I have been taking short walks because like you it is still painful to walk but I think the less weight my legs have to carry the easier it will get so if I can do it anyone can

in reply toLynn62

Both of my older sisters have had a hips done and one a knee done. Both say it was painful so I hope to avoid that - if I can get down there.

I have done a spreadsheet to monitor progress so I wll be super-conciouse of any gain.

Well done on the 5 pounds to date as that is good going. I use the computer, painting and archery as a distraction to consuming, do you use any hobbies in that way?

No spirits, wine or ale.........oh whoa is me.

We are off on holls today and will be back in a couple of weeks or so. I just hope I do not over-indulge on the food side before we get back. I get along fine on the LCHF bit but my wife is opposite to me. She loves carbs and the toaster.

Best of luck everybody and hope to report less all round when we get back.

lots of armchair exercises, that really work different parts of the body. Check out on youtube or ask your physio

You could try chair exercises. At sport centres.

Thanks for the support and encouragement everyone. We are now back from holls and I dreaded getting on the scales. However I had lost 4lb in all as I did not deviate apart from one icecream - it was delicious. I'll settle for that! I am knocking on the 16stone barrier, perhaps I'll break through it this week.

I'll have to catch up with reading now to see how you all have done. Best of luck.

Well done, losing 4lb on holiday is a great achievement. :)

Thanks, I am happy about that as it is too easy to give in and say "just one wont hurt". But it doesn't stop at one does it?

I'm also a carer for my wife as she has MS. We both eat well and certainly mine is unprocessed food but giving up the ale. wine and spirits has done most good I feel.

I've read most posts and peeps seem to have done well.

It is not easy but it feels good getting off the scales.

I did note that my sisters bathroom scales showed me plateaxing for about 3 days on the trot. They also were switchable between the units.

It is time for my breakfast of 50g of porridge and a cuppa for SWMBO.

I have been away from this site for yonks, It must be the concentration on weight loss. It has been over twelve months since I started (January 2015), I am now three stone lighter having put on 7lbs over the festive season.

My BMI says I need to be eleven and a half stones. My wife says stop at that, the Dr says 'a little more wouldn't hurt'. A blood analysis for minerals indicates all is well just down a minute amount on zinc. A fasting blood test for cholesterol is timetabled for Wednesday.

How are peeps doing out there? I felt out of it a bit because so many were on the treadmill and I was not able.
