I think my doctor is trying to sabotage me..

Ok, so maybe she's not doing it intentionally, but she is definitely contributing. I had a gastric sleeve surgery in March. Everything was great, I had lost about 100 lbs over 4 months, but I was struggling a bit with depression. My Dr. put me on prozac. Well, a month in, and not only did I stop losing weight, I was struggling not to gain! Eventually, I figured it was due to prozac, so I let her know, and she switched me to wellbutrin and prescribed amitriptyline for sleep, as well as a diuretic, cuz I was retaining water like crazy. Well, here I am thinking I must be the only person to gain weight on wellbutrin.. Today, I found out that amitriptyline causes weight gain/water retention. Not only that, but taking wellbutrin with it, intensifies this side affect. What the hell? Why would my Dr. keep prescribing me things that are well known for causing increased hunger/weight gain and water retention? I'm so frustrated that I've spent thousands of dollars on this surgery, and can't lose a single lb for over 3 months now because of this medication. I've tried intense cardio, yoga, starvation, anything, but no results! How long can it take for my metabolism to return to normal after stopping these meds?

Hi

If you stop taking anti depressants you have to stop slowly but they take about 2 weeks generally to leave your system. Amitriptolene is well known for weight gain but prozac doesn't normally do this as much. I'm sure your doctor wouldn't prescribe these drugs unless she thought you needed them but if the Amitriptolene is just for sleep then maybe there might be something else appropriate. If you can't sleep be a use you are troubled maybe talking therapies may help, if anxiety is the issue at night the beta blockers can help. I would talk to your doctor or even see a different one and explain how you feel andtry to find a mixture of drugs that wwork for you. Don't forget tho serious depression is a very severe illness that can be life threatening so if you are very depressed treating the depression is more important than losing the weight right now, you can do that once you have resolved the depression. Also it isn't inevitable that you will gain weight on anti depressants it is just something where you need to be very vigilant to prevent weight gain, which incidentally can also be a symptom of depression itself.

Thanks! I'm going to focus on living healthy from now on, and quit all the pill poppin. These meds have done more harm than good. I just want it out of my system.

Please don't do it overnight or go cold turkey it can make you very ill. You might find when you reduce your dosage that you canfind a good level for you or you may do best without but please ddon't just stop overnight. Good luck with it and if your depression gets worse please see your doctor.

Check out "Forks over Knives" and "Food Matters". Eat loads of fresh fruit, veg, nuts and seeds, drink lots of water, that will not only fill you up because of the fibre, it will give you loads of nutrients, some of which could be missing, if you are suffering from depression. Check out Dr Andrew Saul and niacin. Good luck

I actually like this idea. I've been focusing on being healthy. In the last yr, I quit smoking, quit drinking, lost weight, and started practicing yoga, so this is perfect. Thanks!

Ugh I know. The depression of being overate is terrible. You should get yourself on a new medication as well. I give up on sleeping pills. I did ambien, and I ended up sleep walking around my neighborhood trying to break into people's houses, lol.. NOT GOOD. I can laugh now, but that was scary, and now this stuff made me wanna eat everything. Best thing is to live healthy, and I'm leaving the meds behind. Only thing I'm taking is vitamins from here on..

Its the devil and the deep blue sea, yes those drugs do make you weight gain, but does she not treat you for depression??? Maybe to see a counsellor to deal with those dark thoughts you get and find out why?? maybe you were eating because you felt miserable, like all of us.

So maybe the trick is to find out the source of the depression. Go see a ciropractor, they can help with the depression, and lighten your thought pattern. something all to do with the spine, brain, and blockages. Getting stiff and parts get blocked, so they increase flow, by manipulating the bones or pressure, to the head, help. Just try it, keep an open mind till you try it.

After years of struggling, I heard of this guy who cured this ladies fitting, and my daughter walked in with hip displacia, and she was on crutches, when she came out she was walking without pain. So theres something in it.

Personally I have suffered with dark thoughts and heavy, for no real reason, no energy,,, after going he put weights on my body, like heavy cloaks, and I had slipped disk, hes eased the pain from that, and I feel lighter and have more energy, that I havent felt for years, now I have been able to join a gym, couldnt before because my back to delicate. Which has made me feel better cos Im more active. I feel I have got me back!!! before all I wanted to do was sleep.

I suppose its holistic medicine, working with the body, not putting loads of pills in it. Working with natural old methods.

Good luck with it, its worth a try,,,

kind regards

Linda
