It's Now Or Never

I need to lose five stones in weight and desperately need support from anyone willing to help me. I am so tired of being fat and unfit and always feeling unwell.

My weakness is junk food which I eat whenever I feel low (which is most of the time). I binge and can't control myself.

Any advice/support will be hugely appreciated thanks.

I think us "big girls" feel like this frequently. I am 76 and am overweight and T2 Diabetic. Have you been tested for diabetes? - that really focuses the mind and I had to attend a series of lectures on healthy eating. When you live alone as I do now with my dear husband in a nursing home, it all seems too much trouble does n't it?

Have you any hobbies to occupy you or friends who might be pleased to take a walk with you most days, time permitting of course. With very careful planning, which I think is the key when shopping, I have managed to loose almost a stone, very gradually.

At the moment I am very busy because I am moving home to be nearer to visit my husband where I shall be able to walk everywhere instead of jumping in the car which I am hoping will help me a lot. With the winter coming I shall need to get rainproof coat to carry this resolution out. I wish you well. S

Hello

It's so nice to find someone else in the same age-group who is concerned about losing weight. I've heard so often 'Why bother at your age...' reaching for the third biscuit.

I too am doing my best to avoid becoming T2 diabetic. Having seen what my husband does day in day out, and has done since 1981, it's something I can do without. He had it coming down both sides of his family - I'm fortunate that I don't.

Walking is something that every three-year old can do without even thinking about it, but once you can't walk so easily you realise what you've lost. I'd love to be able to walk everywhere but can't. Tiredness is something I find, as I get older. But we're fortunate, he and I, that we're still together and I hope we shall be for some time to come. I am so sorry to read about your husband.

What we do nowadays is: have a good breakfast containing some protein (no sugar-laden cereals!), a decent late lunch, then usually, I don't want anything else at all, he only wants a small snack. We don't count calories but it can't add up to such a lot in a day - 2 meals rather than 3.

Best wishes

Margaret

I can totally understand how you are feeling. Have you tried the clean food diet? I am doing this and do not feel hungry at all. It is mostly vegies and protine , no rice or flours and NO sugar. Fittness Pal is a great. Help too. Coconut oil is good too.

I have joined a group we are also exercising three times a week.

If you can get your head around it you will do well.

Hi Justtoes,

Many thanks for your quick reply. With support like yours I'm sure to be successful this time. I am determined to follow a healthier lifestyle - I have no choice. If I go on abusing my body like I have done for years I won't be around for much longer.

Thanks for all your encouragement.

Hi Deborah, how are you doing this week? One day at a time with no junk food. I hope you enjoy vegies. I have been enjoying spinach, mushrooms, and zukinii lightly fried in coconut oil served with salmon, yum it is just great. I hope you will enjoy this too.

All the best, Lynn

Hi Deborah58. I also needed to loose 5 stone and I joined slimming world. I have lost 3.5 so far (over 2 years) and I have now got myself off junk food. I eat loads - but I now understand what is good to eat - and I also have leant the importance of planning so that I am not tempted by takeaways and convenience food. Some of my new friends from the group have lost 5st and one has lost over 7st. You may be able to get a referral from your GP and attend for 6 weeks and see if it helps kick start your weight loss. You have already made up your mind to do it by posting this - so good luck and I wish you every happiness. x

My stepdaughter has lost a huge amount of weight with SW, in fact she was their Slimmer of the Year a couple of years running. She's keeping it off and has found a new lease of life. She never exercised, unless you count riding her 1000 cc Kawasaki motor-bike as exercise, but she does exercise now she's slimmer, boxercise, things like that.

Many thanks for replying Tricky Nicky ...and for your kind and positive comments. I want so much to not feel tired and unhealthy anymore.

Hi Deborah, sorry you feel so fed up I can understand how you feel.

It's a bit of a vicious circle you feel bad about yourself you feel what's the point and then you move into the can't be bothered phase so you binge then you look in the mirror, you feel unwell and so it starts again but now what you have actually done is to break that circle by looking for support, help and advice from others who have been where you are now.

This is the beginning of you feeling better, take tiny steps ones you know you can manage it doesn't matter what the next persons doing you do what's right for you.

When those tiny steps produce a good result you will feel good you will feel proud of yourself and any negative thoughts will start to melt away.

This is a new beginning, go for it girl we're with you every step of the way

I think you've identified the problem, always the first step to solving it: your weakness is junk food and feeling low. Why do you feel low most of the time? Can you identify why this is?

It might be a good idea to have a word with your GP. It is NOT normal to feel low most of the time. There has to be a reason. Some form of mood-lifting medication may help e.g. serotonin.

Although I'm happily-married for the 2nd time and have a lovely step-family who think the world of me, there are other things going on in my life which give me intense pain and dark thoughts especially in the night-time. But what I think about binge-eating etc is this: I could stuff my face with chocolate all day long, I could scoff cakes from morning to night, and none of it would alter the things that make me unhappy. Not at all! Eating would not make me any happier because it would not solve the basic underlying problems.

Think on this. Does your binge-eating actually make you feel any happier or solve your problems? I would guess not.

Best wishes

Margaret

Hi Margrete,

Many thanks for your prompt reply. You have just confirmed exactly the conclusion I have come to with regards to binge eating.. It has NEVER solved any of my problems. I need to deal with and face those problems and I'm sure my binge eating will stop and life can be much happier healthier and become less stressful. I actually believe that when I binge it makes me even worse and doesn't solve anything.

Starting new eating plan on Thursday. Let's hope this is it.

My weight has fluctuated, I used to comfort eat so much so that I piled on 3 stone in a matter of 2 years. I have been dieting now for 2months, hard when I am quite ill and can't exercise. I have lost 9 pounds so far. The tips I can give you, shop on a full stomach and don't buy any goodies, use the website Myfitnesspal which helps you monitor calories in. When tempted to eat the junk, imagine it is covered in maggots, that will soon put you off and finally, use the mantra FOOD IS TO NOURISH MY BODY NOT MY EMOTIONS.

It is hard, but it only takes 6 weeks to re-educate your body's eating patterns. Good luck.

Hi many thanks for your support. I've had a problem with binging on junk food since I was about eight years

old and I just want an end to it. Yes you're right I must shop on an empty stomach and learn to deal with my emotions in a different way . If I have junk food in the house I ALWAYS eat it eventually. So the key is not to buy it in the first place.

Thanks again for getting in touch.
