Trying! It's good to be honest

I did well on 12/28 but yesterday my blood sugar crashed twice and I ended eating everything that was wasn't tied down. I didn't mention before that I've had type 1 diabetes for 62 years. Insulin and some of my other medications make it harder to lose weight. Add that to my inability to exercise due to terrible back pain and spasms and I do have a tough time. Enough with excuses. I need to write down my food and stick with it. Today I snacked at lunch time. I promise myself not to snack this afternoon. I am determined to lose 1# a week, as Tabby Cat suggested. The 60# weight loss is too big to contemplate but 1# per week isn't. Thanks for the support. I really need it.

How about dropping in on the Daily Diary now, and posting your meal plans for tomorrow? Having said it "out loud" can be really helpful for keeping you focused

It must be a battle, dealing with T1 diabetes all these years. However, at least you have a clear line of attack, with diabetes being a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. I assume you plan around keeping carbohydrates as low as poss

can I make a suggestion....instead of eating 2-3 big meals every day...try eating something small and protein based every 2-3 hours...I have binge eating disorder and I've found that that has helped me...by 1)Body/brain constantly feeling full 2)not needing as much food to feel full.....I also in the past have stopped eating at a certain time...helps the digestive process...but this is hard working 12 hour shifts.....also use premier protein shakes....since you are a diabetic....check with your doctor before you tackle anything

Hi, there are mixed views about frequency of eating. For me, it was a relief to realise I could happily eat 2 meals a day and not feel hungry - though that was only after I'd drastically reduced the amount of carbohydrate in my diet.

I've never gone in for protein shakes. Do they provide more protein that a couple of boiled eggs?

mizzou7016 profile image
mizzou7016Visitor in reply to BridgeGirl

It depends on the brand. The shakes I use have 30g of protein.....think an egg only has 6.....the ones I use have 160 calories...the reason I eat less product more often is that 1) I am an emotional eater....and 2) I eat really fast.....I'm getting better at it but my body has struggled...

Thanks mizzou7016. It makes it harder because I want to eat meals with my husband, especially dinner. I guess I could eat a few really small meals during the day and then a moderate meal for dinner. I wish I liked hard boiled eggs, but I've never been a fan unless they are deviled eggs. Maybe I can find a low cal deviled egg recipe. I really would like to cut way back on my carbs. I can't eat just too much protein because I have mild kidney disease. It's hard to figure out what I can/ should eat.

Your 1 pound a time approach is great. Looking forward to our journey together in 2024!

I really like the fact you have broken the overall goal down into manageable milestones. We have a habit of only looking at the final finish line and it can create a feeling that no matter what happens and how well we do....Until we reach that final goal, we are failing.,..and that is NOT the case!

My belief is that in order to stop the snacking, you need to understand the trigger and manage that impulse when it happens. It sounds tricky, but when you start to feel yourself edging towards a snack and you had made an agreement with yourself not to, bring awareness to the thought and allow yourself to sit with that uncomfortable feeling a while. It will pass, I promise!!

Definitely agree - whenever I am about to have something extra I don’t need, if I literally walk away and give myself the smallest thing to do to distract myself an hour later I realise I haven’t thought twice about it since and am so glad I didn’t give in bc you realise how much you didn’t need it. Just need to give your body time to catch up and tell your brain that you are full xx

I am not diabetic but I used to get low blood sugar and I know how it is to eat everything under the sun when that happens. This is how I manage I dont know if it would be helpful to you. I found caffiene to be a big trigger to my blood sugar crashes so cut that out. I also take a daily cinnamon tablet which helps stabilise blood sugar. I learnt when I was having a crash to eat something carbohydrately, like a bowl of sugar free museli then I would go for a lie down until I felt better, upstairs and away from the kitchin.

Hello, I have been having a read of your thread and a book I have End your carb confusion by Dr Eric C. Westman. Regarding T1, he says you can follow a low carb/ketogenic diet but need "a medical professional who can advise you in adjusting your insulin doses". Do you have medical support,  t1d1961 , to provide your care for this? All the best x

I see an endocrinologist every 3 months. I'm not allowed to go on a keto diet because of my kidneys. I tried paleo and I got all messed up. Luckily, my kidneys didn't suffer much in the long run.I asked my primary care doctor for a referral to a dietitian. I never heard from her. I'll try again with another one.

I really appreciate the help everyone here offers.

All strength to you. With you having a long term condition, you'll know what floats your boat. I too have a medical issue and my doc had a cow when I said I had tried a long fast between appointments, but we found a compromise. Of course I hope for instant thinness! But doc says not too quick. I respect his point of view. A good advisor is someone what we need. Happy 2024, Sue x ps have you read any Jason Fung?

Wow...62 years!! I've only done 30 as a type 1 and I feel your frustration at loosing weight. Everytime I even walk for 15 minutes I come home having to eat some carbs...very annoying. Congratulations on making a move to loose 1# a week, good start. I think writing everything down is a good idea

I don't think I eat alot generally but snacking is a problem... especially at 4pm

I hope you have some success...I too am going to see if I can get a dietician referral for help

30 years is amazing, too. Good job. It sounds like you are healthy. That's fantastic. I'd be healthier if I could exercise. My bad back pain keeps me from it, but hopefully that'll improve in 2024.Are you in the States? Are you on a pump?
