I do phisio twice a week and have joined a local gym where I am trying to improve my upper body strength .

Unfortunately I have had no nutritional advice ! How dies one find a qualified nutritionist?

Have been in a wheelchair for 2years was on a high dose of steroids until Dec 2013 which caused the rot to set in

Many thanks for any help!

Hi, You should be able to get nutritional advice at your surgery; I asked my doctor and he referred me to one of the practice nurses who I now see regularly. I assume you are in the UK, and therefore the NHS also run a six week course called Weight Matters. Again, your doctor or practice nurse should have the information about this. I am just coming to the end of the course and found it invaluable - it covers everything form what you should be eating to lose weight, portion sizes, reading food labels etc and also covers things like self esteem, exercise etc. Good luck with your weight loss journey

Many thanks for your advice just what I needed...I feel happier going to my doctors if I know what to ask for!

Do you feel any benifit yet from your course?

Good luck!

The course really helped change my way of thinking about food, especially regarding what 'catch phrases' companies use to sell goods to you that you think are healthy because of the words they use, and it also educated me on what an actual portion size is compared to my previous guessing. Since the course started six weeks ago, by making a few simple changes I have lost on average 1.5lb a week, and 3 inches from my waist and an inch from each arm. like yourself, I am disabled and limited to what exercise I can do, but with everyone's encouragement and invaluable tips I am so glad I joined the group. Although this week will be our last week, we can still attend for weekly weigh ins, and all the group have agreed to still meet regularly to keep the support going.

Hi!

I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from the health conditions that you mentioned. I hope that you manage to find a way to lose weight, become healthier & get where you want to be in life.

I think that its fab that, regardless of your situation, you are willing to make the effort to go to the gym & try & lose weight etc.

I wish you all the best.

I am a 36 year old lady who weights 25st 10lbs. I joined weight watchers 8 days ago & lost 3lbs in my first week.

7 years ago I had a back injury & had to sleep in a reclining chair for 5 years instead of a bed, as I couldn't lay flat, had a mobility scooter & a home help, agoraphobia & depression.

I could have just accepted that this is the way it will always be for me orI could fight & do something about it.

I chose to fight & managed to overcome all the above that I suffered from.

I am now in no pain, sleep in a bed, walk at a normal pace for up to 30 mins, no agoraphobia/depression, joined the gym, etc.

in addition to the 3lbs I lost at weight watchers, I have managed to lose an additional 14lbs since Xmas day.

The thing that helps me the most is making a large pan of soup each day which I fill up on for at least 1 meal a day & also in between meals to fill me up.

I cant be bothered preparing veg myself so I use frozen veg, but do sometimes use fresh onions & pickled gherkins.

I don't follow any recipes, just make my own concoction.

My favorite soup is carrot & Brussel sprout soup.

To make it I add half a pan of frozen carrots & half a pan of frozen sprouts, fill pan with water, add a tbs paprika, a teaspoon garlic granules & 1 tablespoon onion granules & 2 large pickled gherkins. Boil & blend with a hand blender.

I use all kinds of veg, don't add salt as don't want to raise my already high blood pressure, so add various things to soups to add flavor, such as curry sauce (asda smart price), curry powder, gherkins, ketchup, salad cream, brown sauce, mustard, etc.

I also have rivitas or rice cakes with extra light cheese triangles (25 cals a triangle), topped with a few slices of cucumber or tomato, or instead use cottage cheese (chives or pineapple). I also use quorn sausages too & stick t2 of hem in microwave for 3 mins 30 secs.

If you go to your doctor & ask them to refer you to see a dietitian cost free on NHS, then they will give you a tailor made diet plan

Take care

KEEP ON KEEPING ON!

Kind regards

XX

Wow, great post! And inspirational .

Love your idea of making a soup for the day - it is a good way of getting some of the '5 a day ' we are advised to aim for .

Good luck with your weight loss journey .

Glad to hear you are tackling thing, and seem to be doing very well, ryvitas can help, I find marigold orange stock is a nice drink, use it sometimes with a teasp of seeds in it, I tend to use frozen veg too, although do use fresh carrots and parsnips.

My life was changed in August 2012 when I watched a BBC Horizon programme, "Eat, Fast and Live Longer" vimeo.com/54089463 and I thoroughly recommend you watch it. I used to have terribly painful knees but I lost three stone in six months and my knees are perfectly 'normal' now. I'm not saying that you'll be able to get out of your wheelchair but losing weight will certainly help your mobility. I use an app called MyFitnessPal which is brilliant - you log everything you eat so that's a great motivator not to eat what you shouldn't! I'd thoroughly recommend a book by Kate Harrison called The 5:2 Diet which she wrote after watching the programme. I know thousands of people whose lives have changed and their medical problems have reduced.

Please take 10 mins to watch these 2 youtube video clip of a man who was born with no arms, no legs, but didn't let that stop him from achieving more in his life than a lot of abled bodies people achieve in theirs. CLIP 1: youtu.be/DeTMVq6kQZI CLIP 2: youtu.be/6P2nPI6CTlc It will certainly inspire you & give you hope. We only get out of life what we put into it. The more you put in the more you get out. Unfortunately no one is going to do it for us, we have to do it ourselves. Yes it is difficult to face & overcome these things but its not impossible. Where there's a will there's a way. If you cant get over the wall, go around it. If you cant go around it, dig under it. If you cant dig under it, then smash the wall out the way. However you get past that wall in your life, you will manage it one way or another if you have the determination & want it hard enough. Don't ever let anything hold you back in life. We only have one life, so regardless of our circumstances, we need to make the most of it, make the most of what we have got. Be thankful for what we have, rather than waste our whole lives dreaming & wishing we had what we have not got & maybe never will. One of the worst feelings in life is to live a life of regret. I could have, I would have, I should have. Instead, lets say I DID :0) The only way that I managed to overcome the things that I have overcome in life is by putting my trust in The LORD (GOD) & ask him to help me get through life, just one day at a time, not in my strength but in his. xx

I second the home made soup, and add some lentils for protein. I also like to bake, and have found two 'no added sugar' cakes which I make occasionally. One is a malt loaf, the other is banana cake, the sugar in them comes from the fruit. I do need to keep my carbs under control to loose weight but can't give up cake completely, so just have a treat from time to time!

Enjoy the sunshine, it does make a lovely change.

Hi Wheeliegrandma,

I'd really suggest you talk to your GP and/or to any neurologist or neurological team that you are in contact with and ask them how best to address your weight issues. That includes what impact losing weight might have on your condition, or what impact a significant change in your eating habits might have on any medication regime you are on.

They should be in a position to refer you to a nutritionist or to provide you with diet advice tailored to your underlying medical conditions.

If you intend seeking nutritional advice privately you could research that via the internet, or via your GP surgery, or local hospital who should be able to advise you of local qualified and registered nutritionists.

Well done on taking the bull by the horns and getting yourself off to the gym. That's a good start. Best of luck with your weight loss efforts.

Start with plenty of fluids, herbal tea is a good one, as is hot marmite or stock drinks, the other thing is blood type diet works well, research it, great ideas, and it works, believe me!

Kick the mindless nibbles esp at night, they add up, try to eat protein at most meals fills you up for longer, good luck xx
