I think I have PCOS

Hello,

I previously thought I had under active thyroids but not I think I have PCOS.

I had a blood test in April 2020 and the doctors said they were normal. However, I had them requested.

My free androgen index is 8% (0.0 - 7.2) and considered above range.

I’m currently on a 1200 calorie diet and exercising 5x a week ( burning 400+ calories) and yet I can’t seem to lose any weight.

Additionally, I previously had cysts in my ovaries

What do you think? My doctors won’t give me the time of day

You can ask to be retested but a combination of blood work and follicular cysts (12 or more per ovary) is enough for a diagnosis.

It’s worth checking the NICEA guidelines for diagnosis (there’s a link in the useful resources pinned post)

Hi Maymoonah,

I remember the doctors would not give me the time of day until I after I got married (became sexually active), persistance is key.

Keep going, can you ask to see a different GP?

A raised testosterone level was found after a routine blood test for me and I was sent for a scan.

Hi i had a scan done and that's when i was told i had pcos because i had cysts on my ovaries they said they would take the cyst away they don't do any harm i was in a lot of pain ever month with crap and that's why i was attending the hospital x

They aren't actually cysts. The condition is misnamed. They don't remove the follicles as treatment for PCOS. It's a symptom, not a cause.

I found going to an endocrinologist rather then a gp was extremely helpful. That is where I got my first diagnosis. I found my gp didn't take me seriously and didn't order test other than the reg routine ones. I've been to more than 1 endocrinologist and they all have taken it seriously and given the right tests and options after my diagnosis.

My doctor did bloods for me and said I didn’t have pcos. Went to a fertility clinic and in my first appointment they said that they thought I had pcos and now just waiting for my scan. I get the impression that my gp doesn’t no anything about fertility. Your better of finding a expert.

Unfortunately, like me, it's possible to have both as they have symptoms which can be similar or the same

Where did you get your 1200 calorie diet? Did it come with a shopping list? I am desperately trying to lose weight. Thanks
