Self diagnosed pcos

Hello,

Hope you’re all well.

I’ve always have regular periods since I was 13. Now I’m 21 and my periods stopped in November. I’m worrying because I think I have PCOS. I’ve been doctors and they said I need to wait 6 months. I cannot wait 6 months because my anxiety is killing me day by day. I’ve tried everything to make it start and nothing is working. I’m scared when I get married and I want to have children it’ll be hard for me to conceive.

I had an abortion last year February when my periods were regular. Do you think I’m infertile now?

Please help.

Does PCOS run in your family? Has your doctor tested you for PCOS at the last appointment?

My mum had it when she was my age.

I did go doctors but she said I have to wait 6 months and then they will carry out tests.

Hope that helps x

I've had PCOS even before seeing a doctor, too. When I saw my doctor, at one of my first appointments, she took a look at me in the exam room and agreed that I had had PCOS since I was a teenager (I'm now in my late 30's). I had horrible cramping and the periods were heavy/every other week. My mom doesn't have it, but other relatives in my family do, but they haven't been officially told that by a doctor, either, yet. They think they may have it since they have some of the same symptoms.

I apologise for such an abrupt question in advance but were you able to have children?

I decided not to have children biologically because of other health issues/risks. I had surgery 7 years ago in mid.-August. No worries about your question.

Hi,

I was having regular periods until June last year. I was getting concerned about it so I rang my doctor. Instead of seeing a Gynaecologist, I was seen by my practices Advanced Nurse. She asked me the normal questions such as: is there any chance that I could be pregnant at all, the answer was a no. Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome runs in my family so I am at a high risk she was saying because my grandmother, aunty and mum all have it. She straight away booked me in for some blood tests and for a ultrasound scan.

She was also talking to me about spotting, if you spot quite often then that is potentially a sign.

If you have no look with your own doctor, I would try getting an appointment with another doctor, even at another practice. I have had to do this a few times and it has been worth while.

hope this helps x

The doctor is right I think you need to wait and see, November really wasn't that long ago in the scheme of things. There are a number of things that could be causing this the thing that stands out is if you had the abortion in November that sounds like too big a coincidence. You were likely stressed out and that continues plus it could be your bodies way of protecting itself. I would try and put it out of your mind, concentrate on eating and living healthy and if, it turns out you have pcos, yes it's harder to conceive but not impossible I gave birth nearly a year ago and you've got youth on your side which makes things easier.

I’d try not to worry about it as even if you do get a diagnosis this early the doctors will likely tell you to lose weight (if you’re overweight) or put you on birth control to regulate your hormones until you're ttc. I have struggled with my periods since they started and went to various doctors who didn’t take me seriously or told me to wait a year or 2. It wasn’t until after 2.5 years of not having any periods while ttc that they finally sent me for some ultrasounds and diagnosed me.

When the doctor did diagnose me though he said “It’s a very common diagnosis, it’s just a different kind of normal and you can definitely get pregnant.”

So don’t worry! Hope this helps! x
