Hi I received my blood tests and wonder if they are okay.
TSH= 0.98 (0.20- 4.50) NO T3 0R T4 WAS GIVEN
SEPTEMBER, TSH WAS 2.65 I HAVE BEEN ON 75MG THYROXINE FOR QUITE A WHILE. WAS DIAGNOSED SUB-CLINICAL 18 MONTHS AGO. BUT FEELING VERY DIZZY FOR MONTHS AND TINGLING IN HANDS AND FEET.
FOLATE = 7.2 UG/L
VIT B12 = 806 NG/L
PLATELETS 433 (HIGH) WAS 45O 4 MONTHS AGO
I HAD BREAKFAST BEFORE THE VIT B12 TEST, BUT READ AFTERWARDS I SHOULD'NT HAVE ANYTHING TO EAT. DOES THIS INTERFERE WITH THE TEST?
IT SAYS, STORES ADEQUATE FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REPEAT B12 MEASUREMENT DURING THIS PERIOD. IF PATIENT IS ON SUPPLEMENTATION, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO MONITOR B12 RESULTS.
.
( I AM NOT ON SUPPLEMENTS )
Thanks

Hi, thank you for your reply. I was a bit worried about the B12 because I had breakfast an hour before the test. I also took B12 supplements for just over 2 weeks and wondered if the B12 would have been lower if I had not taken them, although, I did not take many. I have stopped them altogther now.x
Your symptoms of dizziness and tingling are exactly what I get when I am hypo, although B12 deficiency can also cause the tingling. With a B12 result as high as yours though I would think your B12 is OK in spite of supplementing and eating before the test (although I don't know that much about B12).
I really think that you need a FT3 and FT4 test done, although convincing your doctor of this maybe tricky. My suspicion is that these are low in the range inspite of your TSH being OK.
If your GP/lab won't test these then you could opt for private tests - details are on the main TUK website - here is a link:
When I had my copy of the tests, I noticed the only one that was done was the TSH. I asked the nurse if I could have my T3 and T4 done and she ticked them on the form, but It Is obvious the Lab did not do them. So if they did'nt do them, I don't think they will do the FT3 and the FT4 either. There must be something wrong, the way I am feeling, and my TSH is okay. I also got ringing in my ears and it makes my head very fuzzy.
If I have the private tests for FT3 and FT4 and they come back abnormal, would my own Dr treat me?
Hi Lucky - ringing in the ears and fuzzy head also sound like hypo symptoms to me - I have had all of these myself when under-treated and to be honest when on thyroxine only. I am much better these days on NDT which contains T3 as well as T4.
If the tests come back as abnormal your GP could repeat them on the NHS if he/she didn't believe them, although I can't see why he/she wouldn't believe them. You could also use them to push for a referral to an endo if you wanted to.
Unfortunately doctors in the UK are so obsessed withTSH when looking at the whole picture including FT4 and FT3 is so much more important.
