Help with blood test please

Hi,

I had some blood test results back today. I have had my thyroid completely removed due to cancer and am on 200 Levo daily, here are the pertinent results:

Serum ferritin - (CH64) - 66 ug/L 25.00 - 350.00ug/L

Serum free T4 level 30.7 pmol/L 12.00 - 22.00pmol/L

Serum TSH level 0.06 mu/L 0.27 - 4.20mu/L

Serum 25-HO vit D3 level - (CH64) - 75.7 nmol/L

Serum B12 result 181ng/L

Folate result 7.8ug/L

The doctor has prescribed me Cyanobalamin 100mcg yesterday as he said the B12 was pretty low - is that sufficient?

Do the other levels appear OK?

Many thanks.

Hello again ;

The most pertinent result is not there - no T3 reading ?

T4 is basically a storage hormone and inert - and needs to convert well to T3 - which is the active hormone that runs the body and we do need optimal core strength vitamins and minerals to assist in the conversion of T4 into T3.

Your T4 is over range and you will likely be told you need a dose reduction BUT without a T3 reading this is not advisable and you need a TSH, FreeT3 and Free T4 drawn at the same time and refrain from taking your daily dose of T4 until after the blood draw which should be before 9.00am in the morning and leave off all supplements for the week before any full thyroid hormone blood panel.

I believe you need your ferritin up at least to 100 for thyroid hormone T4 to convert well to T3 - and as a man you can likely afford to look at being at around 50% of this range :

Folate needs to be up at around 20 :

Active B12 75 ++ ( serum B12 500 ++ ) and vitamin D up at around 100:

Thanks for the reply. No, I did not get T3 result, but I am due a full thyroid test in the next couple of weeks, this one last week was more to do with vitamins I think...

So from what you are saying I think I understand that:

my ferritin needs to be increased to around 100 (from 66)

my serum folate needs to be increased to around 20 (from 7.8)

my serum B12 needs to be increased to about 500 (from 181)

my serum vitD needs to be increased to 100 (from 75.7)

Is my understanding of the above correct?

Will the tablets prescribed be sufficient to address my vidB12?

Presumably I will need to look to further supplement the ferritin, folate and VtD in addition to the B12 supplements that I have been prescribed?

Many thanks again.

I think as a man you can afford your ferritin to up to around 50% of the range given -as previously detailed.

++ signifies over and above so B12 serum is as detailed 500++

These targets are I what I use for myself - and I need to daily supplement them all :

Thanks PennieAnnie, sorry for being daft, but you said:

"your ferritin up at least to 100... and as a man you can likely afford to look at being at around 50% of this range"

My ferritin is currently at 66 which is more than 50% of 100 (i.e. 50), so this shuold mean that my ferritin levels are OK?

Thanks again.

No - sorry - I was referencing the range you gave us for ferritin viz; 25 - 350 ug alongside the ferritin result you gave us.

Oh, right sorry, my misunderstanding.

In that case you mean that I can aim to be roughly in the middle (i.e. 50%) of this range, so circa, 187 ug? meaning that I DO need to supplement ferritin as well then?

Thanks again (sorry for being thick!)
