Hi there šŸ‘‹šŸ¼

I have Hashimotos and so have been taking multivitamins since my diagnosis, as well as the standard better you sprays for iron, vit D and B12.

Recently Iā€™ve been trying to get pregnant (no luck yet) but have been taking vitamins to help me conceive, as well as magnesium, omega 3, calcium. Itā€™s about 6 tablets and the 3 sprays mentioned above.

Am I over doing it? I have a Thriva test waiting to be done but havenā€™t got round to it yet. I just donā€™t want anything to cause issues with the pregnancy.

Definitely test including Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

B12 and folate are important pre conception and during pregnancy. You donā€™t want too low a levels or too high a levels.

Multivitamins never recommended on here anyway. Most contain iodine, not recommended for anyone with Hashimotoā€™s. Your Levo contains all the iodine you need

Stop any supplements that contain biotin 3-5 days before test as biotin can falsely affect test results

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

How much levothyroxine are you taking

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

What were TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 at most recent test

Are you on gluten free and/or dairy free diet

I take 75mg a day and my most recent TSH level was 1. Iā€™ve been feeling fairly good lately and my gp is aware Iā€™m trying to conceive. Itā€™s only been a month since starting so early days.

That Inessa lot don't half make it difficult to see what their product contains! - Starting on the right page you have to go to Ingredients, then choose an ingredient group (e.g. Vitamins), then click on each and every vitamin to find out how much it contains.

But if you are taking that and some others, you really need to make a chart of ALL the ingredients to work out how much you are taking.

Inessa contains iron, vit D and B12 - which are also the Better You sprays you are taking!

There are several there that you want to be careful with - too much if not a good idea for several of them.

Can you make that chart and post it? That would help clarify how much you are taking of everything.

And remember that biotin can affect blood test results!

I think you might be over-doing it a bit, yes. Why the calcium? Are you deficient? Calcium supplements are not a good thing to take because they are very badly absorbed at a cellular level and tend to build up in the soft tissues and arteries.

As for the mulit-vits they are never a good idea and rarely do anything to help. Which multi are you taking?

In any case, I doubt it's low nutrient levels stopping you conceiving, more likely to be low thyroid hormone levels.

Iā€™ll need some sort of supplement while pregnant so Iā€™m not sure what would be better? I tried to find something of a super high quality.

Iā€™m not struggling to conceive, not yet anyway, Iā€™m taking vitamins for my body and for to potential of being pregnant. My TSH level is 1, my concern is more to do with if I could be taking too many vitamins sorry.

Well, it is a multi-vit. Anything that contains lots of vitamins is a multi-vit by definition. But I can't find a list of ingredients and that would put me off for a start. I like to know exactly which nutrients are in it, how much and what form. But it seems it contains iron which means that most of the other ingredients will be blocked from absorption, and given how much it costs that makes it a very expensive iron supplement. You might just as well throw your money down the drain.

Oh! Just found the list of ingredients! And it contains calcium so as iron binds to calcium, you won't be absorbing the iron, either. And it contains iodine. I don't know if that is affected by the iron but if it isn't, it's highly unlikely you need it, and as you are hypo you shouldn't be taking it.

Why will you need some sort of supplement when pregnant? You need what you need, nothing more. And to find out what you need you should get vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin tested and supplement accordingly. More of anything is never better.

Personally, I think that if you're going to review your supplements, that one should go for a start.

An important point for fetal development - babies donā€™t make their own thyroid hormones until mid gestation (week 20).

Therefore until then the baby relies entirely on maternal thyroid hormones.

The most critical week for fetal brain development is week 5 after conception. Just at, or even before, most women confirm they are pregnant.

Therefore it is absolutely essential that you monitor and maintain optimal thyroid hormones while TTC. Studies correlate sufficient Free T4 in early fetal development specifically as an indicator of good outcomes.

Now is the time you can check this. If you wait until after you conceive, there wouldnā€™t be time to correct.

Yep, my gp is aware and I have my levels checked regularly, luckily my gp is pretty good with it. More so concerned with whether I could be taking too many vitamins really as I know it could be detrimental šŸ˜

And re vitamins, if youā€™re going to take the multi, helvellas suggestion to list it all out with the other supplements is a good idea.

Just listing it all now and wow, itā€™s a lot. Iā€™m going to cut the pregnancy one out until Iā€™m pregnant. And then Iā€™ll cut out the sprays. Gives me time to use the sprays up. The only thing that confuses me is the mixed messages about iodine, some people say it helps your thyroid but some say to avoid.

Iodine is hotly contested. I am not an expert nor opinionated on it.

But if you are taking Levothyroxine you are already getting some iodine (itā€™s in all Levo tablets and all naturally made thyroid hormones in our body). You may know that the difference between T4 and T3 is that one has 4 iodine molecules and the other has 3.

I think thatā€™s where some confusion comes from. That of course we need iodine. But supplementing is a different issue. Personally I donā€™t. And other may come along with other points of view.

Ahhh okay, I never knew that thank you! I guess thatā€™s why itā€™s best to supplement with individual vitamins as to not overload on ones we may be getting from elsewhere. Thatā€™s really helpful, thank you!

Exactly true! Multis have three problems

Too much of what you need given other food/supplements ingested

Too little of what you need - ie, not meeting a threshold to be effective and therefore a total waste of money

And things that are detrimental to either absorption (iron) or your health (depending on your condition)

Itā€™s also essential to test before then test at intervals - we are all different and need diff amounts to get to the same result.
