I was on Tirosint initially 50mg which work r really well but I still had cold extremities and mild muscle fatigue leading up to my period so my doctor put me on 75mg Tirosint every two days which was horrific. I dropped back down to 50mg Tirosint and was then place on NDT grain 1 and taken off Tirosint.
Right before I shifted to the NDT my period had finally gone back to normal on the Tirosint, my PMDD was only intense for a day or two before my period started and I was feeling good but we suspected I still was converting T4 to T3 so I tried the NDT.
My numbers were really good on the Tirosint but I had 2-3 nagging symptoms that were still lingering.
I'm on week 4 of the NDT and I'm struggling to decided if I should stay on it or not.
Pros:
- I've had days where I've felt like my pre-thyroid complication self (Feeling happy, motivated and healthy).
- My libido returned.
Cons:
- My appetite has gone through the roof. It's been really hard to deal with. I'm basically never satisfied and I do eat well balanced meals.
- My hair is falling out
- My PMDD has gone back to starting a week before my period instead of a few days (This makes life really difficult at home because I don't have much control over my responses with how intense my emotions become).
It's clear to me that the added T3 has made a difference in terms of mood which is amazing but the appetite and PMDD are deal breakers for me. I've always had a difficult relationship with food that I've worked hard to heal but the increased appetite and cravings are a slippery slope for me.
I can't help but wonder if supplementing the Tirosint with Liothyronine might be a better option for me.
Has anyone combined the two? How did it work out for you.
I see my Endo in two weeks so I'm trying to figure out potential alternatives because the T3 has helped but I think the NDT might not be the right fit.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you!

That's weird. Did you mean you suspected you still weren't converting T4 to T3? That would make more sense.
But that's not something you suspect, it's something you know by looking at blood test results. And, as you haven't given any blood test results (with their ranges) it makes it difficult for anyone to comment.
Four weeks is much too soon to decide if it suits you or not, the dose hasn't had time to settle in yet. And the problems you're experiencing might just be because you're not on the right dose yet.
The increase in appetite could be a positive thing. Have you had your core nutrients tested yet - vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin? Could be some of them are very low and your body is trying to raise them by making you eat more. Food cravings are a definite sign that your body is lacking something, you should try and find out what. What do you crave?
Whether or not Tirosint + T3 would be a better option for you, no-one can tell you. You'd have to try it to find out. But changing after only four weeks would not be a good idea and would probably set you back in your recovery.
Hi, what is PMDD stand for? I am curious about your journey as I am also reverting back to NDT's despite staying on T3, just lowering my T3 dose. I have hypothyroidism. My holistic GP said I have secondary thyroidism but not according to my endo! So confusing... My sugar cravings have increased also. I've not heard of Tirosint. Does this treat your pituitary gland or thyroid?
