Magnesium?

Calceolaria profile image

I’ve been trying to boost my vitamins and built in magnesium. I’ve also been reading the recent research that this could be a real wonder supplement across a range of issues? So it’s attractive! But that aside, I don’t think it’s agreeing with me. I’m (or was) taking a capsule a day, 80mg magnesium from glycinate. I can’t describe how I feel when something doesn’t feel good for me - I’ve had tussles with B vits and even D in the past - but I just know - and if that sounds neurotic, maybe! 🤔

Simple question as Google is indeterminate - can I open the capsule and sprinkle on food?

As there are magnesium glycinate products which are in powder form, it appears to be perfectly reasonable to open the capsules.

As magnesium has a relaxing effect on the muscles, many people find dissolving the powder form in a small glass of water, taken at bedtime works best.

I take magnesium citrate in powder form. I should point out that all forms of magnesium I've tried have tasted vile. And the pills I've tried are HUGE, and I find them hard to swallow (which is why I switched to powder).

But these problems with magnesium do not put me off taking it because it has benefits for me, mainly in reducing muscle-related problems e.g. cramp, spasm, twitching, benign fasciculations.

One point to bear in mind is that the kidneys get rid of excess magnesium in the body via the urine, IF the kidneys function well enough. Anyone with poor kidney function should be very cautious. It's worth knowing the symptoms of both deficiency and toxicity.

Thanks humanbean. I do have CKD but at a ‘normal’ ‘age-related’ level, if that makes sense - it doesn’t to me. I will have a good read of the links tomorrow and thank you very much.

I'll warn you now, magnesium glycinate tastes absolutely disgusting unless you mask it in something like fruit juice. If you can manage to drink it just mixed in water, your taste buds must be broken!Magnesium malate powder is much better, that version is better taken in the morning though.

Another great suggestion. I’ll check that out. Thanks.

It's a triple blend of bisglycinate, malate & aspartate works ok for me & the reviews are pretty good👍

It dependson what you want it for because different preparations adddress different issues, Glycnate is relaxing so good for sleep and muscle relaxation, Citrate is often touted as good for constipation.

I used Malate for a while for Fibro pain and energy levels. And there are others, avoid Oxide though, its cheap and poorly absorbed.

Thanks. I was advised that it’s necessary for vit D absorption.

I agree, very good company, Humphre.

You can also add it to bath ( epsom salts) and let it be absorbed that way too

Thanks. That’s a good suggestion. I have the Better You spray but I always wondered how effective it was.

I was recommended by pharmacist who is also integrative medical practitioner to take Natural Vitality CALM. Its magnesium citrate in powder form that comes in lots of different flavours as well as original unflavoured. Mix with water and I only take before bed as it puts me straight to sleep. You start on a low dose of 1/2 tspn (although I went down to 1/4 as it gave me bad dreams) and work your way up to 2 tspns. Sorry don’t know of a glycinate option.

Thank you Gravie. I’d only be taking it as a ‘helper’ for vitamin D. Although my sleep is poor these days!

It should help then! I’ve never had any trouble with sleep at all even though I have Graves so maybe that’s why I’ve needed to gradually introduce it or maybe it means I really need it, I’m not sure. My magnesium has been in range but she told me it’s still better to have more since soil so depleted these days and hard to get enough from food. I keep reading how good it is for you. I only take a teaspoon still. Good luck if you try it!

Most magnesiums I’ve tried give me an upset stomach after taking for a week or so, even the biglycinate. My Mum had the same reaction as did my daughter and we tried a number of different brands. The magnesium oil stings our skin, the better you night cream is quite good. Baths are the way to go for us. That and taking a single capsule every 3 days or so. 🌱

Thanks. I was just researching all the previous posts as magnesium really does seem to be essential for vit d (or vice versa.) Im finding it confusing in terms of warnings - too much/ too little!? Gaaah!
