Magnesium and timing...

I'm looking into supplementing with magnesium. Have been reading through past posts on the subject and magnesium citrate seems to be the version recommended. Please correct me if I'm wrong. If have dreadful leg, ankle pains at the end of the day, don't know where to put my legs plus I wake in the night with leg pain, numb hands, wrists and dead arms. I have been trying Epsom Salt baths but am now looking to add magnesium supps too.

I am a ft gardener so have always expected some aches and pains at the end of the day but it's getting worse.

At present I take B12 (Solgar) & B Complex (Thorne)& Vit C (Solgar) at breakfast and my Levo at bedtime. When would you suggest taking a magnesium supplement as I stop eating and drinking at about 8pm and take my Levo between 10pm -11pm?

I've been looking at Thorne's 135mg magnesium citrate, hopefully that's a good one but grateful for any other suggestions.

That aside, I am feeling great (touch wood, fingers crossed...😊), I have taken all the advice from this group over the past year and it's all worked. For that I will always be grateful.

As always, thanks for any help.

janey1234 As magnesium is calming it's recommended that it's taken in the evening, I usually take mine 30-60 minutes before bed.

There should be 4 hours between Levo and magnesium.

A typical dose of magnesium is around 350-400mg daily, and the Thorne supplement says to take 1-3 capsules daily.

Magnesium citrate can have a laxative effect.

I use magnesium citrate and because I prefer to keep unnecessary ingredients/fillers to a minimum I use Natural Calm powder and make a drink with orange juice.

Have you checked out other forms of magnesium naturalnews.com/046401_magn...

I agree about Natural Calm which makes a lovely evening or night time drink and helps with sleep. Jane x

I take my Levo at bedtime as well. So I take magnesium late afternoon/early evening about 6pm

I use Calm Vitality magnesium powder -choose this as was easy to start on low dose and adjust upward

It tends to have calming & relaxing effect. So afternoon or evening is best

Thank you SlowDragon ... this timing will work well for me. I assume you can still have your evening meal and final cuppa after you've had your mag' drink or do you have to leave gaps between that and food / drink too?

I'm thinking have Mag' at 5pm. Dinner 6.30pm, final cuppa 8pm, Levo 10-11pm. 😊

in reply tojaney1234

That's pretty much the schedule I work with as also take levo before bed. I don't feel any evening tiredness which I was concerned about with taking mag late afternoon- I try to take mine 4 ish with vit C.

janey1234 in reply to

Aha...thanks for that. Is there any reason you take your Vit C then too? 😊. Is it best to take those 2 together? X

It gets a bit fiddly trying to fit everything in, but I take C with iron prior to lunch on empty stomach and then C again with Mag - I *really* need the help with constipation even with all the extra veg I eat :)

Humanbean posted a really helpful bit of info with a link on the various interactions - worth holding on to this and you might need to read (and reread!) a few times but C and mag seem to be both synergistic and antagonistic - all I can say is it works for me :)

I do also soak my feet occasionally in mag salts (usually of an eve).

I also agree, Natural calm power works best for me. It can be absorbed quicker than tablets that have to be broken down in the stomach.

I take chelated or biglycinate at bedtime, on an empty stomach.

I'm sure citrate is the type best for constipation. If you do a websearch for "types of magnesium" you'll find lots of information.

Just saw an earlier reply with lots of info on best type of magnesium, so I now know which one to go for. Just need to get timing right.

Don't want to mess up my bowel movements (sorry if you are having your breakfast 😊) as they have returned to normal since getting all my other dosages right and going gluten free.

Magnesium is best taken away from iron as well (just in case you're taking that too).

No iron, just B12, B Complex and Vit C at breakfast and Levo at bed time. X

I rub Magnesium oil into my mid section around ribs after a shower. I take thyroid meds at night and then throughout the day I space out and try and get in Potassium and Vitamin D and Iron Vitamin C and B vitamin and folic acid so all in all not a lot of time to eat food!!!

Vitamin D should be taken with a fatty meal or milk.

Cheap and reliable blood spot tests:

Vitamins B and C can be taken at same time.

I have been taking magnesium glycinate in capsule form but it is supposed to be three times a day so not really suitable to be taken in one hit at night. I only take morning and night as its so expensive, I ordered some yesterday and has gone up to around £28 for 90 capsules but it contains no nasties or fillers. Couldn't tolerate citrate because of IBS, I think they are all pretty good but always avoid magnesium oxide as it is apparently rubbish. Good point, thank you, about iron as I have been taking slow release iron capsule at night along with magnesium, selenium, holy basil, omega 3, don't even get me started on the morning saga of supplements, lol. Such a pain and so difficult trying to take them all. Will have to look into this Natural Calm Powder. Doctors Best chelated was supposed to be good, I was taking that but there were quite a few comments on the Osteoporosis forum about the company being taken over by a Chinese company and people are generally very suspicious about anything sourced from China, with good reason.

Haha...yes I moved to nightime Levo as cramming them all in in the morning was a nightmare. Think I'm gonna go for the Natural Calm powder, try the foot soaks and continue with the occasional Epsom bath and take the powder late afternoon.

I wish you well x

Thanks, I did check the Natural Calm powder but its citrate which I can't tolerate. I have done the foot soaks but its carrying the bucket of water which is the problem for me as I have severe osteoporosis and already have a crushed vertebrae. It does all become a nightmare not knowing what is causing what pain in all sorts of places. I find now that apart from it not helping with the pain, codeine makes me feel odd and am wondering if that is tied up with the Hashimotos. I wish you well too x

Magnesium citrate is not generally regarded as the best magnesium supplement (I have seen it described as "basically an irritant").

I take magnesium malate (Swanson Premium Magnesium Malate - 150mg Elemental Magnesium, 1000mg) which is cheaper than the other preferred forms. I take it with lunch along with fish oil, vitamin K, CoQ10, vitamin D and Life Extension Two-Per-Day multi vitamin / mineral (with a good amount of fat in the meal for the fat-solubles). Like other forms of magnesium it does have a laxative effect: I could not tolerate 2 capsules initially so I used magnesium malate powder to gradually increase dosage (I now take 6 capsules / day, all in 1 dose). In retrospect I may have been able to do without the powder if I had stayed on 1 capsule longer (I only waited a week) before increasing to 2.
