NHS prescribed NDT Armour thyroid in UK !?
I wish I knew how this worked myself and if your ever figure it out, please do let me know.
Have I understood your post correctly mind? Your Doctor is willing to prescribe but your Endocrinologist doesn’t know how to obtain NHS Armour Thyroid?
Surely, so long as you have a prescription any pharmacy that has stock can issue you it?
Basically I am seeing current endocrinologist and he is aware that I can’t tolerate not t3 synthetic nor Levothyroxine I have a rash and we are trying to privately found through goverment armour thyroid but the area I live which is Derbyshire has got no this medication so now we are looking elsewhere and my GP is trying to refer me to various endocrinologists in different locations / cities such as Manchester Sheffield Cardiff . I was refused by Sheffield hospital they said they don’t issue such medication now I am referred to Manchester waiting for specialist to reply if they have such medication there … do you understand what we are trying to do ? Iam sure someone in uk are prescribed through nhs armour thyroid cases like me but now it’s the case of finding specialist who does and can prescribe it and medicine is available. Iam working with PALS as well if we ran out of options they need to do something regards this as iam intolerant to nhs med and have conversion issues ( I did DIO2 test and one of the genes are faulty which means I need t3 ) I have self founded NDT from America but prices are just crippling up every time I pay for 2 grains £270 for three month supply and I don’t work due to disabilities but I also can’t pay for my own medicine for the rest of my life !!!! Nhs should take some action regards this otherwise iam left with out the treatment !
Hey there Ari :
If you go into openprescribing.net - you can see by surgery and / or CCG/ ICB areas where any NDT prescriptions are still written and honoured within the NHS service:
Sadly you can't drill down far enough to know who actually writes the prescription - at least you couldn't when I took a look at my area some 6 years ago.
Enter Armour as the drug you want to run the analysis on :
The NHS is meant to offer the 2 most well known brands of NDT - Stateside Armour and Canadian Efra - with Efra meant to have the least fillers :
Normally the GP’s are terrified to prescribe Armour so you are very lucky yours will. For the funding of it to be justified to the CcG or whatever they are called, an NHS (not private) Endo must tell the GP to prescribe (it’s not the consultant themselves that prescribes).
Its best to get 6 months supply at least as it can take 2 months for pharmacy to source and supply it.
It costs my surgery over £800 twice a year so you can see why it’s so rare to get it in the UK. I fought for years and sadly have recently been asked by my new GP to get back up once again from an Armour-friendly NHS Endo. I believe such a person no longer exists very sadly so I fear for my quality of life again now.
