Hi,I have recently been getting a very strong smell of ammonia in my nose.

It's putting me off food, my face seems puffy and skin very dry and my weight has increased.

I take 150mg of levothyroxine for hypothyroidism and take stelara for my Crohn's.

It sounds like you might need a dose increase or working on getting vitamins OPTIMAL. Do you have your most recent test results to share with us?

To see whats really going on many people here pay for private blood tests as the NHS doesn't incude FT3 results which is the active hormone. I'd recommend you look at private blood testing to include key vitamins - ferritin, folate, B12 and D3.

Hi,

I had a blood test two months ago.

Ferritin 208

Folate 4.0

B12 555

D3 42

Do you have the ranges for those and D3 needs the unit type - letters after the number. Also thyroid results with ranges?

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

Taking levothyroxine on empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after

No medications or supplements within 2 hours

Essential to test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3

Test thyroid levels early morning an£ last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Phantosmia - Phantom smells

There have been quite a few posts here over the years about phantosmia - getting the sensation of a smell when it doesn't really exist. All too often, the reported smell is some sort of burning, maybe like an overheating electricity plug/socket, often tobacco, sometimes petrol, but can be anything.

I used to be convinced I could smell someone smoking in circumstances where it was impossible!

Here are a few previous posts - but there will be others. I try to keep adding when new posts on the subject are posted. You will find many cross-references between posts.

I have also just found a recent paper which specifically mentions "ammonia". Though it is in the context of Covid, I think it could be worth a look.

From my experience of having to take 125 mg Levothyroxine for 6 years now for hypothyroidism, I’ve noticed that when I eat gluten foods (bread, pasta, pastries, etc) my eyes, actually my whole body swells. Hence, I’ve cut down on those. I’m trying to remove them completely, but it’s hard as these are the most common foods. I’m also trying to lose weight. I’ve heard that cutting down on gluten, sugar and junk food helps and moderate work-out (eg. brisk walking). So far, I’ve only lost 2 kg last year. Unfortunately, I’ve put it back again and much more on top of it as I had a stressful year.

I’m also taking Selenium supplement which I’ve hear it helps thyroid hormone.

I don’t know too much about Crohn’s, and I have no idea about the ammonia smell.
