For the last three days all I can smell is petrol when I'm no where near any no matter what I do does anyone know

Over the years we have seen a small number of people say this sort of thing (not sure if it has always been petrol!).

A friend suddenly felt very ill recently and couldn't escape a really unpleasant smell that nobody else could detect but it made him feel sick. The GP said that a virus can be the cause. He was fine after a few days!
