That's it basically and it's driving me to tears. So debilitating and when you google it it doesn't make for good reading. It's been a few days now and it won't go. I have been under huge strain starting my own business and having work done to the house but nothing comes up for that. I've decided not to take my NDT today as I thought I may have been overdosing as it doesn't come in until I've been up for an hour or so but no it still came. I haven't been out of the house today. Any possibility it's a hypothyroid issue? Read something about too much disparity between T3 and T4 can cause it?

I get this but it comes and goes ,I had it when it was really hot recently I was wondering if the air con in the car was causing it drying out my nostrils, and I get it when neighbors have had a bonfire again made me think it was dry as I suffer with dry eyes ,mouth and privates just a stab in the dark if anyone else has an answer I would like to know

You may benefit from reading up on Sjogrens syndrome. SS is another autoimmune disease.
Your symptoms are very similar to, and fit, SS list.
I am diagnosed with hypothyroidism (hashimotos), SS, ? Lupus.
Google British Sjogrens Society Association. They have a phone helpline too.
The air conditioning in the car definitely adds to symptoms increasing, in my own experience.

Yep! I get the cigarette smoke smell. Usually at night in bed. It's annoying. I read that it was an adrenal issue. But it usually goes away after a while.
I hope so it's really getting me down and I can't taste food properly now either

Have you had a viral infection recently? An upper respiratory infection or sinusitis can cause olfactory dysfunctions.
I was diagnosed eight years ago with phantosmia and parosmia following a viral infection. My GP had referred me to the Queens Medical Centre because I also had a long-standing fine-motor-skills tremor which could indicate Parkinson's Disease, but all was found to be okay in that respect, thank goodness.
The smell disorder has, in my case, persisted, though it has changed and improved over time. I don't have the constant smell of smoke any more but mostly can't properly identify odours. Sometimes I am surprised and delighted to smell and identify cut grass or coffee, but generally my ability to recognize things by their smell remains very limited.
On the other hand, I've known people recover their sense of smell completely after a relatively short period of time. Your problem has only just arisen and you could well be one of the lucky ones. I do hope so as I know how very annoying and intrusive it is. Fingers crossed you recover quickly!

I can smell smoke and also gas when under medicated. It took ages to settle but has thankfully gone now even though I still haven't found quite the right dose. It is very intrusive as you say but did go eventually.
I thought it might be overnedicated but I suppose it could be under too. I read somewhere that if your adrenal glands are overworked then NDT stops working?

Did you see Ocean 62 comments about smoke smell and Radd's reply? (Old posts on smell..) I have heard if medication is taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, it might take an hour or so before the medication works. People usually say not to eat food with medication, but I find less side effects, with medication if taken with food.
May be the smell symptoms start when you take your dose. You can ask adminstrators if you can split your NDT dose, as the thyroid supplement might wear off after a few hours.
You need specialised info on this formulation and how it is absorbed. If you look up Marz
you might ask for help over dosage and time of day. This contributor is great and takes this formulation herself, I believe.Hope you find what is causing the problem.

I've been on the same NDT for a while and the same dose. I thought I'd try messing with the dose but it achieved nothing I'm afraid

Do you know who makes the NDT and if it is distributed under another company name. People in Uk have been complaining their medications have altered, with removal of T3, making people ill. Does your prescription specify both T3 and 4?
Marz is an expert and might be able to tell you more about drug sources and changes with EU, guidelines. Some sources might add other substances without your knowledge.

Badhare recommended WP thyroid in " thyroid unlocked "porcine versus bovine thyroid. (2 years ago) If you look up WP thyroid website it gives details of the products and chemists. NP is a generic drug but may be imported from the far east. Thailand.
Some folk have complained they think their regular brands have synthetic thyroid added as they don't have the same smell. Either you could try a change in brand
or try bovine thyroid instead.
Shaws administrator gives really good information on how to take the thyroid. On logging onto the NP website - there are no real comments from users - so no feedback about the product. If you look up bovine thyroid you may find links with thyroidunlocked feedback on brands of porcine and bovine. In any event people say there has been a change in their old product and when changed to N.P. there were ambiguous comments.
WP Thyroid is not currently available, at all.

I don't think there is a shred of evidence that any prescription-quality desiccated thyroid product has synthetic thyroid (whatever you mean by that) added.
There are no prescription-quality desiccated thyroid of bovine source that I know of. (Possibly arguable for Thyroid-Gold.)

NP Thyroid is a product from Acella Pharmaceuticals in Georgia USA. It distributes the drug worldwide in various forms as a generic. It has links with Thailand Biolabs, as a distributor. NP is not recognised by the FDA as a safe drug according to Drugs.Com website. The negative comments concerning changing from other brands of dessicated thyroid such as Armour came from Treato.com - they were subjective comments about problems with NP. A comment made by a user who tried it instead of her normal brand stated she felt very ill soon after taking NT and had to be admitted as an emergency with side effects. The patient said she had drunk coffee which might have accelerated the effects.( steadyhealth.com July 2017.)
The fact that the FDA do not licence this as a pharmeuceutical drug with safety, indicates it falls short of standards of licenced drugs. This may be so in the UK,
too. As this is a natural product it is not a processed drug. Other comments on Treato.com were favourable. Another comment on website Compare Armour Thyroid July 18th 2018 , titled " A generic form of Armour" said the person had heart problems with pounding, weakness and fatigue on changing to NP. As everyone is different, reactions to drugs or natural substances, are unique responses. As you say NP there is no evidence it does not conform to standards.

No desiccated thyroid products are approved (licensed) in the UK at all.
Not being licensed does not mean that they fall short of standards of licenced drugs. They might; they might not. For reasons that are not entirely clear, none of the manufacturers of desiccated thyroid products have chosen to apply for approval by the FDA.

Yes - you have summed up the information I was trying to express.
The websites had many errors, and it is difficult for folk to look at all the posts
for disclaimers. Thank you for the info on Acellar. I looked at their NP Thyroid and found they were described as generic - how can you have a generic of a human prescription product? Ha!

Nature -Throid and WP are still available through a USA website. If you want to change you would have to find a supplier and pharmacy online in the UK for your prescription. Hope you feel better soon.

Last post of someone successfully getting WP was a long time ago now - so far as I am aware. Sadly.
I do not know enough about that I am afraid. I take NDT and took ages (a year) to get to a reasonable dose and I take a quarter grain at 5pm to support my adrenals overnight as recommended by the much missed DR Skinner. I found Paul Robinsons book helpful and started taking my NDT by his Circadian rhythm method which I think also helped support my adrenals. Still a long way from back to normal but can at least live some sort of life now. It took a long time for some things to recover eg. hair to stop falling out in handfuls, vision to improve and vertigo to settle, though I still get that if I allow myself to get overtired.
Isabella |Wentz books and articles are interesting re thyroid. She is a doctor with personal experience of thyroid problems and explains how many hidden factors their might be affecting your thyroid and medication. Another tip re taste and olfactory impairment
is to take zinc and vitamin C tablets- This has been very useful for complete taste and smell problem after a virus. You can buy lozenges or vitamin zinc berries 7 seas vits?
Avoiding coffee and alcohol might help as well.
You still have the smoky smell Jody? I have it again now. I did have it previously, it went away and its back again with burning eyes, just like I used to get around a bonfire many years ago. Did you ever get to the bottom of it?
No. I’ve just been brought to my knees by a nasty person who tried to scam me so I’ve been under extreme stress and it went. It’s back again today as I’m getting back on my feet so I know it can’t be stress

Hello Jody - I have just been researching for the same thing - a burning wood smell constantly which I have had for about a week now. I thought it was because I burn incense in the house, but I have cleaned everything and used air filters and its still there really strong - worse at night. I knew it wasn't the house when I got it today driving in my car. I have borderline low thyroid and always have had but never enough to medicate. I do have sinus problems. Its been a while - have you found a solution yet? Thanks, Amanda
