Please remove if not appropriate as I realise this not entirely relevant to thyroid, but I’ve come to trust this forum so much with health queries I thought I’d ask.
Does anyone have any good recommendations for osteoarthritis (in someone with thyroid disease? They are optimal on thyroid meds + B12, B9, Iron, not sure about D)
My immediate thought is Vit D, calcium, K2 & Mg… maybe glucosamine? does anyone have anything to suggest that they have used themselves with success? I’m loathe to buy more supplements that seem to be inconsequential.

Before considering Vit D or calcium please get them tested. If your Vit D is low post your result (with unit of measurement) on the forum as you would need a specific dose based on your result.
Calcium should only be supplemented if found to be deficient. Taking Vit D should raise calcium to a certain extent as it aids absorption of calcium from food.
I have a friend who takes a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement and she swears by it. I have osteoarthritis in my fingers/wrists and I tried it but it upset my stomach.

Is this still the advice if you have used the calcium calculator and know you eat about a tenth of daily requirements? Surely you don't wait to become deficient first?
That rings a bell....think we've had a bit of a chat about it before? I've started adding in some as I know I'm not getting enough in my diet, though I'm mid range at the moment, but haven't had dairy for over a year
It just doesn't seem like great advice to not supplement if you know you aren't getting enough? Obviously balance with Vit D and K2 so it goes to your bones and not clogging up other things.
I also don't understand about calcium in the blood levels, how do they know if this is on its way in or leaching out?? 😕
My understanding is that the body is very good at regulating calcium levels by stealing it from your bones if there is not another available source?
Which suggests to me that your bloods are going to stay pretty stable until you crumble away 😩
I'm glad I just saw your post because I phoned the ROS to ask their advice on my calcium levels which my GP tested and they confirmed that there was no way of knowing where the calcium was coming from and could be leaching from the bones Had a little chat about vitamins and they didn't think we should be taking more than 800 vit D - I told her that I had checked this out with Grass Roots and they thought blood levels should at least be around 100 in the range. She didn't think we should be taking K2 either as their was no real proof that it helped to direct vit d to the bones. Then got a bit of a lecture about overdosing on vits (which I certainly haven't been doing) but told her of my concern that after going dairy free my bone scan was far worse that anyone would have expected. I came away feeling there appears to be a lot of conflicting info out there so will follow up on Imaan's suggestions. I've been referred to a rheumy anyway as I definitely have arthritis now as well so might learn some more from him although don't hold your breath as my faith in doc's is at an all time low.
Amazing they actually told you that... what is the point of testing it I wonder?
I thought K2 directed the calcium to the bones? Vit D helping us absorb more calcium? It does make you wonder about their knowledge... Calcium is a mineral!
I think Imaaan has done her research and I am certainly going to increase my calcium supplement to somewhere nearer RDA
Like you say we know we aren't getting it in our diet.
Let's hope you get a good rheumy 🤞
I feel your worry, it's all a bit 'after the horse has bolted' isn't it 😕
Sadly for me yes but it might help others. Amazingly though I did an online food intolerance test with a reputable company and both gluten and dairy were high on the list and now everything I am looking at whether it be bone health, arthritis, or thyroid are all telling me to stay off dairy so it's all been worthwhile if I can prevent things from getting worse.
Now you are in the know and can get the right supplementation you can turn things around, I've heard of people making vast improvements to their bone density with supplementation and the right exercise and like you say dropping the dairy will have benefited you greatly by reducing inflammation... you are on an upward trajectory 🤗
Thanks so much Eeyore for your words of encouragement which have come at such a good time as I've been feeling a bit down of late as I've tried to come to grips with so many things in an effort to put things right. Actually fell on the ice yesterday which really shook me up but thankfully nothing broken but it was a wake-up call and now have attached spikes to my boots. Take care!
I think everyone is feeling particularly gloomy, what with one thing or another, I'm glad we've connected, often this forum has random good timing I find.
Thank goodness your slip was just a shock, you still have some bounce in you yet 😅
When we chatted trying to find out about bone health before, you'd just had a scan, did they not give you any advice or follow up? Was it just a case of passing you on to the Rheumy?
It just doesn't seem like great advice to not supplement if you know you aren't getting enough?
The issue with taking calcium when it isn't needed is that it could end up lining your arteries, which is definitely not desirable.
As for being told that nobody can tell where calcium is actually coming from, and it could be coming from the bones, I understand that is true. But if you have a good level of calcium which is actually coming from bones then taking extra calcium won't improve bone health, it will just increase your calcium levels in the blood and possibly increase the risk of it lining the arteries.
Personally, I wouldn't take calcium without testing first.
You might find this link of interest, although I would always use it just as a starting point giving me hints on what else to research, and I wouldn't take it for granted that it was accurate.
These are my results, for what they are worth? My concern is if the blood test were any use, why do so many women only find they have an issue after a bone scan?
What do you mean by "Calcium should only be supplemented if found to be deficient"?
The parathyroid glands work to keep your blood calcium levels within the normal range and if your blood calcium level is getting to the lower end of the range, your parathyroid glands release PTH to go "find" calcium, which often means taking it from your bones.
Standard bloodwork with a calcium score is not an indication that you are getting enough calcium via diet and supplements.
When I starting researching how to make my body absorb more calcium, I learned that different countries have different recommended daily amounts of vitamins and minerals, which is ridiculous. In the US for women over 50 the recommended amount of dietary calcium is 1200 mg. I aim to get between 1200 - 1500 mg per day.
Hidden and TiggerMe I recently shared these two brands (Ancestral supplements and Heart and Soil) with another member. I havent tried them but I like that they source their calcium from whole bone.
I'm not surprised it contains phosphorus since the supplement is made of whole bone. And yes it's better to get our nutrients from the food we eat. If it's not enough, I like the above option since its from a whole source.
We shall start a petition to add dietarily to the dictionary
I mentioned two options for calcium but I forgot to mention which product I was using. It's the ancestral supplements bone marrow. I bought it a few months ago when I got my wisdom teeth extracted. I really like that it has the marrow since has some benefits
Btw, I did some searching online on a while back on mcv and hypothyroidism and how it causes changes in our bone marrow. Do you experience cold feet and hands? I dont know why but I got it in my head that its connected somehow to high mcv. I could be off base but who knows. Or I have issues with functional b12 or my folate isnt getting into my cells since both results look really good.
