Hi, can you please comment on my latest lab tests? I think I am oversupplementing.

Iodine 45 (range 52-109 mcg/L)

Vitamin B6 52.5 (range 2.1-21.7 ng/mL)

Vitamin B12 >2000 (range 200-1100 pg/mL)

Zinc 72 (range 60-130 mcg/dL)

Folate 566 (range >280 mg/mL)

Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies 25 (range > IU/mL9)

Pregnenolone 110 (range 22-237 ng/dL)

HS CRP 0.5 (range optimal <1.0)

Homocysteine 9.5 (range <10.4)

I currently take the following. I did not take any vitamins on the day before my test.

4000 IU Vitamin D3

2500 mcg methyl B-12

400 mcg methyl folate

3 mg Vitamin B6

3500 mg Vitamin C (prescribed by my doctor for a few months post infection. I don't usually take such a high dose of vitamin C)

Thank you for any insights.

Hi Xheila,

You do understand that vitamins in general are not stored in the body, whereas minerals are. Your B-6 and B-12 are way higher then what you need, so you are wasting money. Try cutting their dosage in half. Assuming you are eating proper, You'll get a lot of those vitamins naturally. Most of us Hypothyroidism folks have to add D and B-12.

You are your best patient, adjust and see how you feel before next labs.

Just taking three B vits is not going to help you ver much, because the Bs work together and need to be kept balanced. So, you'd be far better off taking a good B complex - e.g. Thorne Basic B. But maybe wait a few months and retest first.

Did you get them tested before you started supplementing to get a base-line? If you want a base-line on B12, you'll have to be off them for about 5 months. But, don't worry about the high levels, they are water-soluble and you will eventually excrete them.

Your iodine is low, but you need less iodine when you're taking thyroid hormone replacements, anyway, because your thyroid is no-longer making thyroid hormone. Are you still taking NDT? If so, you get about 29 mcg iodine from 1 grain, which is recycled, plus what you get from your food.

Your zinc is low, which probably means that your copper is too high, which is not good. Supplementing zinc for a while will raise your zinc level and decrease your copper. But, best to get copper tested first.

I did get a baseline Vitamin B-12, it was 348 (range 200-1100 pg/mL).

The Thorne Basic B Complex looks great, I just ordered some! I will see about getting the copper test. Good to know I don't need to worry about my iodine level, yes, I take 3 grains Armour.

Thank you for the excellent suggestions.
