What is the reference range for T3 and is is Free T3 or Total T3?

katherine107 profile image
katherine107 in reply toSeasideSusie

I don't know I am afraid. Gp only gave me that result. The lab queried why I wanted T3 test done

Well, when you're taking T3 the FT3 is the most important result (it's actually the most important whatever thyroid meds we take), otherwise how do you know you're taking enough or too much? We don't always feel symptoms of overmedication.

Most of us do private tests when we can't get FT3 tested on the NHS. Cheapest for TSH, FT4 and FT3 is MonitorMyHealth which is an NHS hospital lab that offers the test to the general public for £26.10 with code found here:

Make sure to do test as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water

How much T3 are you currently taking

You need to split T3 dose into 3 doses day before test

Taking last 1/3rd of daily dose 8-12 hours before test

So third at 7am, 2pm and 9pm

Test at 9 am following day

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply tokatherine107

Presumably as you have EDS you have autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto’s

Have you had coeliac blood test done

Are you on absolutely strictly gluten free diet

Essential to regularly retest vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

When were these last tested

katherine107 profile image
katherine107 in reply toSlowDragon

I have given up gluten but only 3 weeks ago. Folate b12 and ferritin were done recently shown in the blood tests results. I am taking 50 mcg a day of T3. I take vitamin d and vitamin c.

When was vitamin D last tested?

katherine107 profile image
katherine107 in reply toSlowDragon

About a year ago. I am taking vitamin d supplement

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply tokatherine107

How much vitamin D

Should test twice year when supplementing

katherine107 profile image
katherine107 in reply toSlowDragon

400 daily

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply tokatherine107

400iu

That’s minuscule dose

What was level at last test

katherine107 profile image
katherine107 in reply toSlowDragon

I don't know. I was very deficient a few years ago and was given high dose for 3 months on prescription. Was tested again and said fine and told to take maintenance dose of 400iu. Should I increase? The gp won't test it like they won't test T3. If I pay private for tests where do you go to have blood drawn. Every time I get blood tests done it is very difficult to get blood from arm and sometimes have to go back another day to try again. Should I increase the vitamin d?

Vitamin D test is just 4 drops of blood on a card

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via NHS

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average

Sorry to hear you are having a difficult time Katherine 107. I can identify what you are talking about. I have a private endocrinologist who wants my Vit D to be 125 and recommends dietary intervention with a nutritionist such as Isabella Wetz. I am now taking at least 4000 iu vit d to get my level up from 90.

Best wishes with your endeavours. This forum is enormously supportive and they are so knowledgeable.

I only take 400 maybe increase to double

As Slow Dragon says when you have the results of Vitamin D test come back to the forum and post result. I suspect you will need a significantly higher dosage.

When I was unable to tolerate levothyroxine, it was because I had gluten enteropathy which had caused Hashimoto's and severely depleted all my nutritionals. Do you have Hashimoto's?

katherine107 profile image
katherine107 in reply toEddie83

Yes I have hashimoto

Have you taken a look at the books Izabella Wentz has put out, about identifying the root cause of Hashi's antibodies?

katherine107 profile image
katherine107 in reply toEddie83

No I haven't. Do you know what it is called and will look up

Eddie83 profile image
Eddie83 in reply tokatherine107

Izabella Wentz is a pharmacist who had Hashi's. The books of hers you would be most interested in are "Hashimoto's Protocol: A 90-Day Plan for Reversing Thyroid Symptoms and Getting Your Life Back" and "Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause".
