Hello - I recently had a full blood screening test as I’m part of a covid vaccine trial. It showed my ALP was slightly raised. The test was repeated a week later and was slightly more raised. I now have to have another test in 2 weeks time at my GP surgery. The GP mentioned it could be related to a lack of vitamin D but Dr Google also indicated it could be due to raised thyroid hormones.
I’m hypothyroid and have been well and stable (until recently) on 2.5 grains of NDT for the last 9 years or so. At the end of January though some hypo symptoms returned (headaches, aching wrists and ankles, dizziness etc). I raised the dose to 3 grains just before the first blood test which was on 21st February. I’m now feeling back to normal but wondering if this increase could have had an impact on my ALP level? Thank you.

Have you ever been tested for coeliac disease ? My son had elevated liver enzymes prior to his diagnosis of coeliac disease, since being strictly gluten free they returned to normal.Just be aware your GP may not know anything about this in relation to coeliac disease. My friend who has been a GP for 30 years only discovered it when trawling through BMJ articles when we were searching for an explanation for my sons illness.
Hi Salani,My son was away at university when he was diagnosed, so I was in a completely different situation to you.
I would ask your doctor to do a simple blood test for coeliac disease, but you need to ensure your baby is eating plenty of gluten containing foods before the blood test is done or it may throw up a false negative.
I am not medically qualified so I can't suggest anything else, other than maybe call Coeliac UK , they have a helpline where you can speak to someone who knows a lot about coeliac disease who might be able to point you in the right direction. Their number is 0333 332 2033.
I hope you get some answers because having a sick child is awful, even when they are grown up , as in my case. We struggled for 3 years to get my sons diagnosis so if I were you I'd push for further tests, I do know that liver enzymes can be elevated when teenagers are going through a growth spurt too, but I'm not sure if that applies to babies / toddlers. Sorry I can't be more helpful, do give coeliac uk a ring , they were great when we contacted them. Good luck and I hope your baby is soon on the mend.
Thanks for the replies - I have only just checked back. My repeat liver enzyme test was normal and the consensus seems to be that it was elevated due to me becoming more hypothyroid and subsequently increasing my NDT from 2.5 grains to 3 grains. Luckily I feel back to normal again now with regard to the thyroid symptoms that lead to the increase.
