Raised cholesterol

Hi everyone, I need a bit of advice please. I posted my medicheck results a few weeks ago. I’m not on any thyroid meds. I recently had my cholesterol checked, results 6.5 nmol. I have a doctors phone appointment on Wednesday to discuss both results. Could my raised cholesterol be related to thyroid/hashi problem? My diet is ok, probably could be better

Thyroid results below. Greatful for any advice before I speak to doctor.

TSH over 10 and high thyroid antibodies you should be immediately be prescribed levothyroxine

High cholesterol is linked to being hypothyroid

nhs.uk/conditions/statins/c...If you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), treatment may be delayed until this problem is treated. This is because having an underactive thyroid can lead to an increased cholesterol level, and treating hypothyroidism may cause your cholesterol level to decrease, without the need for statins. Statins are also more likely to cause muscle damage in people with an underactive thyroid.

Are you now on strictly gluten free diet

Hi Slow Dragon,

Thank you, I thought it was linked but wasn’t sure. My TSH has been up & down over last few years really. But as you know docs won’t medicate until over 10 even though my symptoms say differently. I’m hoping he will agree to medicate now although I’m not sure he will recognise the medicheck results. I’ve waited 4 weeks for a phone appointment.

No I’m not gluten free yet. I had bloods for coeliac a few months ago. But I have been looking into a gluten free diet. Hoping to start after seeing what the doctor has to say.

Thank you

As I think I explained in previous post

With two TSH tests over 5 and especially as you also have high thyroid antibodies you could/should have been started on levothyroxine several years ago

See flow chart on top of page two here

Suggest you print this out ready for consultation

Many thanks for this. I will print it out ready. Because of history of heart disease in the family I will also keep an eye on cholesterol. I don’t want to end up on statins unnecessarily. I have previously asked about thyroid meds. I will definitely be pushing for them now. Thank you for your advice.

Hi I hope this helps, I also have an under thyroid problem, which at the moment is fine with 50mg Levothyroxyn, but I also had high Cholesterol which my doctor wanted me to take statins and I refused, My Cholesterol was over 6.00 and now it has gone down to 4.5 because I started taking those little bottles of Benecal. (It is worth a try) Good luck

Oh thank you! Definitely worth a try. I would never have thought to try them. I really don’t want to go on statins unnecessarily. Thanks again 👍

Doctors seem to not understand about thyroid hormones and the effect on the body when our thyroid gland isn't providing sufficient.

Some doctors are apt to give a prescription for a 'symptom' but don't test thyroid hormones.

One of my doctors phoned to tell me I had nothing wrong and results were fine. He did not know what a TSH of 100 indicated!

50mcg is only a starter dose levothyroxine

Thyroid levels should be retested 6-8 weeks after any dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

Come back with new post once you get full thyroid and vitamin testing

Hi SlowDragon, Thank you for your message, I have been on the 50mcg Levothyroxyne for over 12 years with no problem at all, and I had a Medicheaks results and I got a feeling that they are all ok.... Will post my results to see if you noticed anything as I am not good of knowing if anything is wrong.

Always make the earliest possible time for your blood draw even if you have to make it weeks ahead.

It is a fasting test (you can drink water) but don't take thyroid hormones until after blood draw. This gives us a better result.
