Thyroid blood results Graves disease RAI help ?

I was increased to 125mcg levo in July last year and also take 20mcg t3 split in 2 doses. Still feel tired achy and weight not shifting. Here are my results : would be so grateful on anyone's thoughts 😊

TSH <0.02 Range 0.30 -4.50

FT4 13.9 range 11.0 - 22.0

FT3 6.0 range 3.1 - 6.8

Vit d 82nmol/L range 50 - 150

Folate 16.4 range >2.5

Ferritin 70 ug/L range 23 -400

B12 634 ng/L range 197-771

I had my bloods done in morning 24 hours after last dose of levo and my last dose of t3 was last taken 10 hours ago . I take Vit d supplement prescribed and vit b12 supplement . I am not gluten free . Any ideas if I need to up any thing would be received gratefully . Thanks

Many of us on levothyroxine plus T3 need BOTH Ft4 and Ft3 roughly 60% through range

Your Ft4 is only 26% through range.

That would be too low for many people. Perhaps try small increase in levothyroxine 150mcg 2 x week

Have you tried splitting T3 into 3 doses

10mcg at 7am and 5mcg at 3pm and 5mcg at 11pm

Hi thank you SlowDragon I thoufht that too , I just respect your views . Its getting the consultant to agree to increase as I struggled to ge him to up from 100mcg to 125mcg I will try to speak to him on 22nd jan when he calls for consultation. I did do a bit but didnt feel that much better and I did get tested before I went gf and I dont have intolerance. Thanks for your help .

Vast majority of us are not coeliac, but still need to be absolutely strictly gluten free due to leaky gut

The ONLY way to know if that includes you is to try it

Personally I couldn’t tolerate T3 before being strictly gluten free, despite zero gluten intolerance symptoms

You want to keep ferritin over 70

You may also need to be absolutely strictly gluten free

Have you ever tried it!

Hi I did try it when we were on a wheat belly diet and I must admit we lost a bit of weight . It's quite tricky to do if no one in your house hold is gf but willing to give another try . Regarding my ferritin keeping it over 70 is there a supplement I can buy or does it need to be prescription? Thanks again . Also what would 60% of ft4 read ? Brain fog sorry 🙃

Hello Poppyrocks

I keep my ferritin " topped up " by eating a little tub of Asda frozen chickens livers weekly.

Defrosted and flash fried down in a little olive oil I then whizz them down into a pate adding a little mayo if necessary, which I keep in the fridge in a jam jar.

A spoonful of this helps the medicine go down and my ferritin up at around 100 which is where I seem to need it for optimal conversion of thyroid hormone replacement.

I'm with Graves post RAI thyroid ablation in 2005 and now self medicate with NDT and feeling much better.

Hi pennyannie , glad you are feeling well and staying safe in this awful situation we have. I think that's amazing that you have found that to help you. However I cant eat offal (what I really mean is I dint like it and struggle with texture ) . I'm guessing from your answer it has to be diet not vitamin supplements ? . I'll have to read up on other ferritin rich foods. Thank you for taking the time to answer me . Take care xx

No - you can supplement either way but I prefer to go with food if I can:

Believe me I'm no fan of liver - but with enough Hellman's mayo it's just a spoonful of a paste and soon gone on to do it's work.

Improving ferritin, just keep eating red meat, liver or liver pâté once a week etc

I am strictly gluten free and have been for 5 years. I cook gluten free for everyone, or we might have different choices

Eg I have “gluten free breaded fish” if others are having standard breaded fish

Loads of different options these days

If toasting gluten free bread it needs to be in separate GF toaster or use GF toaster bags - available online from Coeliac U.K. and elsewhere

Lots of good GF bread available and GF flour for baking

Thanks for your advice . Going to give gf a go and see how I get on . Does it help with weight loss by any chance? Regards Lesley

Hi poppyrocks369, I am gluten-free because it helps with the absorption of my t4 50mcg and also t3 20mcg. I would give it a try for a few months and see if your medication absorbs better. I am not a celiac or have gluten intolerance but it really seems to help with absorption.
