Blood results

Hello, I have some recent blood tests and would be grateful for comments. My endocrinologist asked my GP to do them and amazingly the NHS agreed , but strangely there was no T4 result although the GP requested it. I was surprised that they agreed to do the FT3 and not FT4. I queried this and was told they would only do FT4 is the F T3 showed a problem. Has anyone heard of this?

I have been receiving B12 injections due to low level at last test, also D3 higher dose as D3 was low at last test. The GP only prescribed 800 which I know was not enough so I have been taking 2000 . The B12 and Vitamin D results are ok.

The latest bloods have come back with different ranges than I am used to. I know the T4 missing result is important but I wondered if anyone could still comment on the FT3, without the T4 result as I have a telephone call from endocrinologist in the morning. Also TSH seems higher than usual as mine is usually more suppressed due to thyroidectomy. I have noticed it is creeping up along with the thyroglobulin ( that result is not back yet).

August 29 TSH 0.398 (0.27-4.20). FT3 3.3. (3.1-6.8)

Nov 30 TSH 0.61 mu/L(0.35-4.94 FT3 3.3 pmol/L (2.6-5.7)

Thank you.

Well you really need both Ft4 and Ft3 tested together ...because you can’t see if low Ft3 result is due to being on inadequate dose (low Ft4) or poor conversion (high Ft4)

But Ft3 is only 22% through range

So you either need higher dose levothyroxine or addition of small doses of T3 alongside levothyroxine

Important to regularly retest vitamin levels

What are actual Vitamin D and B12 results

What about folate and ferritin levels

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

List of private testing options

Medichecks Thyroid plus antibodies and vitamins

Thriva Thyroid plus antibodies and vitamins By DIY fingerpick test

Thriva also offer just vitamin testing

Blue Horizon Thyroid Premium Gold includes antibodies, cortisol and vitamins by DIY fingerprick test

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3

£29 (via NHS private service ) and 10% off down to £26.10 if go on thyroid uk for code

Thank you for prompt reply. My previous results also showed low T3 result, 5.41%, so it has gone up a little..My vitamin D was 48 (30-50 insufficient) and is now 83 (71.0-200.0) I’ve been taking 2000 even though GP prescribed only 800. I guess it still needs an increase.

B12 >2000 ng/L (180-640) am having injections.

Folate 5.8ug/L (3.0-20.0) - is it still bit low?

Calcium level 2.14 mmol/L

Calcium adjusted level. 2.12 mmol/L. (2.2-2.6) as borderline and need to speak to Dr.

Cant see a ferritin result.

I am having T4 test tomorrow.

There’s not really any point just testing Ft4

Any thyroid testing should be done as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

I thought he might want to compare it with the T3 result. Hopefully he’ll be happy with T3.

As you have B12 injections it’s recommended also to supplement a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels between injections too

Difference between folate and folic acid

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Or Thorne Basic B is another option that contain folate, but is large capsule

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

Ask GP/endo to test ferritin and iron levels

I hadn’t realised I should take a supplement as well, thank you. I have the Igennus one so will restart.

Meant to add reminder: At last appointment endo said he might be prepared to prescribe T3 depending on my results after the B12 injections and increase in Vit D. Tomorrow is review day! Fingers crossed!
