Magnesium advice

Hi all

I’d like to start taking magnesium but hoping to get some recommendations? I know it should be magnesium citrate, but is there a specific one people get on with? There are some horror stories in the review section of Amazon!

I have got the better you oil spray. I used it for a little while but found it very drying. Is that as effective as the citrate? Could I just carry on with that?

Thanks 😃

I know it should be magnesium citrate

How do you know it should be magnesium citrate? Have you checked out the different forms of magnesium and what they can be beneficial for? Magnesium citrate is good where constipation is present, and you have to be careful how much you take as too much will cause diarrhoea.

I use magnesium citrate for that very reason and am very happy with Natural Calm Original Magnesium Citrate powder. You start slow and build up to the dose that works for you, if you get diarrhoea you take it back a step. Good for tailoring to an exact dose which you can't get with tablets that have a fixed dose.

Other forms of magnesium and their uses listed in these articles:

naturalnews.com/046401_magn...

drjockers.com/best-magnesiu...

afibbers.org/magnesium.html

Remember to take magnesium 4 hours away from thyroid meds, unless you use the topical form.

Whether you continue with the oil spray is up to you, some people find it effective. I tried it and didn't like the feeling of it on my skin, but I don't really like any sort of creams, lotions, etc, on my skin.

When I’ve been researching I’ve seen a lot that states magnesium citrate is the best to take in terms of absorption and that oxide etc aren’t effective, and are cheap forms. I’m wanting to take it to help boost my vitamin d levels, so was just interested in hearing from people who got on with a particular type / brand and whether people had success with magnesium oils. I agree with you the crawling / ant biting sensation of the spray isn’t pleasant!!

Thanks for your reply

Magnesium citrate is the best form if that is what you need, have you checked out the other forms and what they are helpful for? Some other forms have good absorption. For example, if you don't need the laxative properties of magnesium citrate but maybe have cardiac problems then magnesium taurate would be the better choice.

I’m just reading the links you sent now 😊 it seems so far that citrate may be best for my needs, Altho there’s another recommended for mental health problems (I have anxiety, can be crippling at times). That seems a fairly new formulation though from the second link so I’d probably rather go with something more mainstream !

Anxiety can be caused by low iron and/or ferritin (iron stores). I think low B12 and/or folate can do the same.

I also found that my mood improved tremendously when I gave up gluten 100% ruthlessly.

I’ve had blood tests very recently (previous post). Some could do with improving but none of them showed I was very low in anything, thankfully.

Still picking my way through magnesium info as have been a bit scared of some of the negative reviews! 😊

Anyone supplementing magnesium needs to be sure they have functioning kidneys, but other than that I'm not aware of there being many negative reviews.

Magnesium citrate might cause diarrhoea but if that happens it just means that people should choose another supplement.

I use magnesium citrate in powder form. The taste isn't great, but I'm used to it now. By using a powder I can easily adjust my dose according to my needs. If I take too little I get cramp and sore muscles.

That’s probably the type of magnesium I’m going to go for 👍🏻

I use magnesium citrate although some other forms are good. Magnesium oxide and hydroxide are not much use. If you take too much magnesium it will cause diarrhoea which turns out to be a sort of safety mechanism.

I buy Solgar, to be honest I can't say it is any better or worse than other brands. I tend to buy off Amazon and buy a bottle when I need to make a purchase up to £20 for free delivery.
