Hi there
I have coeliac disease which was finally diagnosed in June 2017 after ordering my own private blood tests and some great advice from this group. I had constantly low Vit D, Ferritin and Folate.
I have been on a gluten free diet for almost 2 years now and have been feeling much better than I have for a very very long time. My last set of tests in Aug 2018 looked pretty good so I stopped all supplements and injections ( I was taking folic acid, a multi B vitamin and injecting B12). However in the last 3 months or so I have been feeling really blah, cant shift weight and struggling with my training (I run or try to!), feel breathless and dizzy and sick. So I ordered some more recent tests which showed the following results (Aug 2018 numbers in brackets):
Folate 3.01 Range 3.89 - 26.8 ug/l (19.98)
Vit D 63.3 Range 50 - 175nmol (91.7)
Ferritin 79.7 Range 13 - 150ug/l (101)
B12 203 Range 37.5 - 188 pmol/L (>300)
TSH 7.84 Range 0.27 - 4.2 mIU/L (not tested)
Free T4 15.9 Range 12 - 22 pmol/L (not tested)
Free T3 5.06 Range 3.1 - 6.8pmol/L (not tested)
So obviously the TSH is above range but my free T3 and T4 aren't ridiculously low. These bloods were taken around 7pm at night as that was the only time I could get a blood draw (I was relying on a nurse friend to do so) so I am not sure how much that skews the results. Does this look like hypothyroidism? My gastro told me it was likely I would have/ develop a secondary auto immune disease alongside coeliac which I initially poo pooed but looking at these numbers I am not so sure. The last thyroid results I had prior to this was post coeliac diagnosis where it was recorded as :
April 2017 3.59
Sept 2015 1.69
April 2015 2.25
So it is creeping up I guess. I am concerned over the drop in folate as I really thought this would stay stable once the coeliac was under control. My vit D has dropped and ferritin but compared to previous drops this is really quite good - bear in mind I live in Scotland and run lots too so would expect to see a drop in these.
Would really welcome an opinion on the above before I go to docs (I moved docs as soon as I was privately diagnosed with coeliac as I had taken in numerous blood tests to show I was low in folate etc and was told to eat better!!). I don't want to to be dismissed as I feel rotten. Proper awful. I know the low folate will definitely be making me feel bad - these results indicate folate anaemia again! - but could there be a problem with my thyroid?
