The doctors' inability to explain what happened to me

In 2000, I was diagnosed with thyroid gland

it was not an increase in its function or a decrease in work, but whenever the size of the gland was large and a narrow place hinders breathing, a surgery doctor has decided to remove the gland completely and give me complementary medicine to live with .

Here begins the strange story ..

In August 2018, after 18 years of operation of thyroid gland. I went to the family doctor because of coughing normal after continued coughing 5 days continuous here asked me Doctor makes X Rey normal The possibility of infection in the chest and already took the XRey and here the doctor told me I think you need to visit chest a specialist doctor of the chest of the importance of cruelty and actually take an appointment and went and when I visited the specialist Chest and first thing to do CT Scan to confirm, went to make CT Scan X-Rey and the result there was a tumor above the heart large size around 10cm x 10cm (for science there is no relationship between cough and tumor at all whenever the discovery of the tumor by chance Find the cause of coughing). My doctor suggested to see a surgery doctor. The surgeon doctor began to give me to do blood tests including and number of two MRI and work of nuclear radiation X-ray and other analyzes and all this to ascertain the size of the tumor gland. When the results of the radiations showed, the doctor told me that it is a large enlarged gland called the thymus gland and should be removed.

The operation will be done by laparoscopy and procedures have already been initiated for the operation in the chest hospital. The date for the operation is determined. All this story is natural now.

The hospital was admitted on 6 September 2018 and after the procedure and the necessary tests for the operation.

The operation was done by opening the chest because of the size of the tumor and adhesions tumor and forced the surgeon to open the chest and removed the gland gland, where the size of 9 * 7 * 4, and also many adhesions in the heart and the main artery and veins and then was the wound and Work is necessary as any surgical procedure.

The enlarged thymus gland has been taken and sent to the specialized laboratory for tumors to detect if the tumor is benign or cancerous (and this is surprising for me and the surgeon) through the process of laboratory analysis. It is found that the enlarged gland above the heart is far from the neck is not the thymus gland is a thyroid gland (Is not it strange that you find “a thyroid gland” in your chest) and to remind you in 2000 the thyroid gland was completely removed.

If anyone like to see the pictures I can send them to you.

I wrote to you for specialists to benefit and experience to you and also to seek an explanation for my condition how to place the thyroid gland in the chest and I removed it completely by about 18 years.

A question that you want to you help me.

Do you have any explanations?

Now after two months from last surgery yesterday I did test blood to check the thyroid function as the doctor requested .

The result:

Free T3 3.53 pmol/L normal rangers 3.48-9.49.

Free T4 10.7 pmoi/L normal rangers 10-28.2.

TSH 34.9 mIu/L normal rangers. 3.48-9.46.

Comparing with my weight 120KG And age 55y.

also for you information since year 2000 I took eltroxin 100 mcg tables

Now my doctor told my we have to increase the tables dose to Eltroxin 150 mcg

Please help me with those results is right to increase the dose of my medicine correct

Thank you

Best regards

Note: I am sorry for my writing and my weak language.

We do not have experience of this. However, it is correct to increase your Eltroxin as your blood tests show you are on too little. You should have another blood test in a couple of months to see if your Eltroxin dose is correct.

It sounds like your thyroid was removed because you had a goitre that was large and hindering your breathing. It is difficult to remove all of a thyroid because sone of the tissue is difficult to locate. If the surgeon tries too hard they can damage nearby tissues such as the vocal cords.

Very rarely a person can be born with the thyroid in the wrong place. For example, sometimes the thyroid can be below the tongue. It might be that some of your thyroid was below the neck and the surgeon didn't know this when they removed your thyroid. Over the years this remaining thyroid tissue could grow. Since it would be difficult to grow upwards past the bones near the neck it might grow downward towards the heart.

This is just a possible explanation, I'm not a doctor. The important thing now is that they get yiur Eltroxin dose right.

It's perfectly possibly for someone to have a substernal thyroid which extends into the mediastinum, the central compartment of the thoracic cavity containing the heart, oesophagus, thymus, lymph nodes & etc; but where you differ is that your thyroid had been removed some years before. Equally though, there are several circumstances in which normal or abnormal thyroid tissue may be found outside the thyroid gland, not just in the neck but elsewhere - thyroid tissue can even be found as a component of a teratoma, particularly in the ovaries, testicles, and tailbone for instance. There can be a number of reason for ectopic thyroid tissue arising - faulty embryogenesis for instance; hyperplastic thyroid tissue in cases of Graves’ disease; sequestered peripherally located thyroid nodule in which the anatomic connection with the main gland is either lost or missed; and accidental mechanical implantation of thyroid tissue in the neck secondary to surgical intervention or accidental trauma. Perhaps the origins of your mass was there from birth as in the first scenario, or as a result of the last scenario when you had your previous surgery, or have you experienced trauma to the area such as in a car crash, who can guess - did your surgeon give you any information?

Your blood results indicate you are currently under-medicated.

Really informative reply, thanks. Bear in mind that English is very much a second language for Oobsjoo but I believe you are essentially saying there are many reasons for thyroid tissue to be somewhere else and Oobsjoo shouldn't worry.

Thank you. I see from the OP's profile that they are a graduate Engineer living in Oxford, and demonstrably able to express themselves about medical/technical matters in English that is of a higher standard than that of some natural speakers.

Hi Maisiegray

Thank you for your excellent explanation of all possible possibilities.

True medical terminology was difficult for me, but it is possible to use technology to translate meanings. I explained my case quickly and I was very pleased to give you what happened with me as a strange event for the location of the thyroid gland and I am willing to give you pictures of radiations and pictures of the tumor after removal .. Thank you all

Best regards
