How can your Doctor say your Thyroid is good when only the TSH - a pituitary hormone - was tested ? You need to know if you have Hashimotos so both anti-bodies need testing - TPO & Tg. Hashimotos is the most common thyroid condition globally ! Also FT4 & FT3 as you know.
How is your anaemia being treated and your LOW VitD ? Both could be causing many symptoms ...
Nothing being treated. Hence my frustration. Going to pay to see a private doctor and endocrinologist. Pain in most joints, swelling of hands, ankles & feet. Inflammation throughout my whole body. Night sweats ( severe ). Can’t stop eating and still losing weight. Eyesight shocking! . Hair thinning an incredible amount. Muscle spasms severe. Muscles in body very very hard :(. Just came out of Major depression. Suicidal every day. That was fixed with antidepressants. Great difficulty swallowing. Very swollen throat. Mouth ulcers ( 6 ) at the moment. Throat raw and losing voice. My voice can change many times during the day. Incredible thirst. Have seconds to get to the toilet or I will have an accident. Can no longer hold onto it ( wearing nappies now ) Menstrual cycle all over the place. Actually went 4 months without one. Has come back now. Was for 3-4 days max. Now going for more than 7 days. Eyelids dropping, one moreso than the other. A lot of pain behind my eyes. Very poor memory and concentration. Getting stuck remembering words ( very frustrating ) had a heart condition. Now have implant for heart. Very sore gums. Only managing 3-4 hrs a night sleep ( exhausted ) This is he third time I have these results. Must go into remission??. This latest attack is the worst by far. I’m 48 years old, when I was 23 I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Sent to psychologist also grrrrr. Does all the above sound like hashimotos? I was thinking Graves’ disease and myopathy as never been treated for thyroid.
Don't like the sound of the VitD with Calcium - also the VitD amount is too low. Is your measurement for the VitD in ng/L ? - if so the level needs to be 60 - so I would suggest an amount of D3 at around 4000 IU's. if the measurement is nmol/L then it needs to be around 100. Also take VitK2-MK7 to ensure increased levels of calcium are directed away from the arteries and into the bones and teeth. That is why it is not good to take calcium with VitD D as D naturally improves the uptake of calcium from foods - I have read !
Not familiar with the Magnesium and Iron supplements ( I live in Crete ! ) Check that the Magnesium is not Stearate ... there are many different types of magnesium and some are better than others. Dr google should be able to explain !
Only have 200g of liver a week - as you could overdose on Vit A. Have a read of SeasideSusie's informative posts. I would tag her but she is suffering at the moment with a poorly back ...
If you type iron into the Search Facility you will be able to read about the different types of Iron. Sorry I am not up to speed. helvella has a resource in a Drop Box link ... he maybe along later ...
Thankyou so much. I shall go to health food shop and purchase such supplements. I am currently not driving as I suffer with chronic deliberating back pain from a serious accident. Unfortunately I have to take morphine on my bad days. Will keep you posted on how i go. Just need a friend to take me at this stage. Back in a bad phase 😩😩. Can’t thank you guys enough with the help you so willingly give. Much appreciated x
I inject B12 for back pain - had de-compression surgery of the spine some 11 years ago ! it works on the myelin sheath that protects nerves - just one of its many roles in the body.
I was prescribed Ferro-grad C (in Australia) about 14 months ago for anaemia but you can get it over the counter too. I’ve tolerated them well after always having tummy upsets with other iron tabs. They are a slower release which seems to help me tolerate them better.
The label says: dried ferrous sulphate 325mg + sodium as ornate 562.4mg (vitamin C which helps you absorb the iron). You need to take them on an empty stomach. I was on 1 a day but saw no improvement so went to alternate days of one then two tabs. That finally worked and I’m now scraping the bottom of the ‘normal’ range for ferritin.
My doc said to stop but I’m still taking them as I feel horrible when off them.
I also had an endometrial ablation to stop monthly bleeding which has helped enormously with resolving the anaemia.
I can’t stand liver or black pudding (makes me want to gag) but I love pate so have been having that lately too.
Hi @Bridie2014. I’m sorry you’re so ill and that you’re having to fight to be taken seriously. Please follow SlowDragon’s advice and get tested for coeliac disease and for thyroid antibodies! Pay for private tests if you need to. Note that you need to be eating gluten for several weeks before Coeliac testing to get an accurate result.
Many of your symptoms sound familiar to me.
I’m in Australia too and have found it almost impossible to get a GP to take me seriously. I was finally diagnosed with Hashi’s earlier this year after having symptoms for 27 years.
I had been anaemic for years and have had chronic joint pain, fatigue, mouth ulcers, headaches, insomnia, muscle weakness, palpitations, hair thinning/loss, drooping eyelids, swollen throat, difficulty swallowing, enlarged tongue, weird temperature regulation, neuralgia, migraine with aura, pelvic pain (including bladder pain and horrendous mid-cycle pain) and very heavy, painful menstrual cycles since my early teens.
I believe the trigger for my Hashi’s was a severe Varicella infection when I was 15. I have never felt the same and that’s when the worst symptoms kicked in.
In addition to Hashi’s (very high anti-tg antibodies at 2599 (<30), I have now just been diagnosed with Coeliac disease (and suspected endometriosis/adenomyosis) as well.
I didn’t realise that many of my symptoms (especially the joint pain, anaemia, neurological symptoms and mouth ulcers) are very common in coeliac disease. Your unexplained weight loss could well be explained by being Coeliac and it’s entirely possible you could also have Hashi’s/Graves. These auto-immune diseases like to hang out together.
The anaemia can wreak havoc on your menstrual cycle too.
Please let us know how you get on. You need to be your own advocate and educate yourself as much as possible and keep fighting until you get answers and treatment. For too long I listened to doctors who told me there was nothing wrong.
This forum has been a life saver for me. I’m finally starting to feel better day by day. I hope you get some answers and relief soon 😊
Far higher percentage of us are gluten intolerant not coeliac......even harder to get diagnosis!
According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps, sometimes significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)
Thankyou so much for the information you have given me. Educating myself as much as possible gives me power to question doctors and push for the necessary tests x
Thankyou so much for your reply emdash. I will continue to fight in order to get a diagnosis and be on the road to some recovery. Will keep you posted xxx
This is first time I hear this. I also live in Australia and always have full thyroid panel done, no questions asked. It’s even called FTF- Full Thyroid Function. 🤷🏼♀️
My pathology forms have only ever said TFT - Thyroid Function Test (TSH, T4) for the standard test. I’ve had antibodies tested but can’t recall how that was worded in the form. I’ll see if my GP will do FTF next time.
AnnaSo, if TSH is within range, under Medicare in Melbourne Australia. T3 & T4 are not tested. I will be paying for private testing to get the necessary results for full thyroid bloods to be done. Again many thanks for your feedback.
THanks AnnaSo, I am based in Melbourne. 3 doctors and emergency department have only tested for TSH. On one occasion T3 & T4 we’re tested also as TSH was not within range. The recommendation given on that occasion was to be-tested in 6 weeks. The next test TSH was within range and no further action was taken.
Vitamin D, supplements you don't need calcium as well, just vitamin D and may need around 2000iu daily for 2-3 months
But your vitamin D is so low GP should prescribe a high dose known as loading dose
As not diagnosed or on Levothyroxine a TSH of 1 is considered normal, but your low vitamins suggest gut issues, so you need thyroid antibodies, FT3 and FT4 tested plus coeliac blood test
Slow dragon, I will take this up with a private doctor. No doubt he will organise the necessary tests also. He came to our house every week as I done the palliative care for both my mum and dad. They passed away in my arms last year. How lucky am I to be able to give them such love and care. I feel blessed. Mum and dad’s doctor I ms absolutely brilliant and gave me a lot of time in educating me on the palliative care for both parents. Funny enough 16 months ago he told me to get a referral to endocrinologist. How right he was. I will make a booking this week to see him. The doctors I currently see for my chronic back pain are useless. They just continually drug me with morphine. Enough is enough. I’ve done all my years for caring for my parents ( absolutely no regrets ). Now it is time to care for myself and my gorgeous son. And my animals of course. I’m generally stuck at home a lot with back pain and now the reoccurrence of thyroid problems. This is the 3rd time I have the symptoms. Must go into re-mission??? With all the advice I am getting from his site is truely welcomed and appreciated. Thankyou all for your helpful advice.
That is so strange as I have full function done every single time. It’s sad to hear not everyone has the same option in same country. I’m in Sydney and usually visit Gap around CBD. Maybe that’s the difference, who knows!
Hi Bridie2014, your symptoms could also be down to peri menopause, have you had your FSH level checked as well?, just a thought. I had mine checked and it came back as in line with peri menopause levels, the symptoms are very similar to thyroid issues. That said, the last time my TSH was checked it was in range, but my FT4 was low out of range, so I am hypothyroid and Peri menopausal, and feel horrendous everyday.
No medication has been prescribed to me, so just trying to get my Vit levels optimum.
Do as you say and get private testing so you can see the full picture, good luck.
Thankyou Sobs, previously to me getting the symptoms again for thyroid my periods were very regular and on time. The time it has been effecting me so much more. Perhaps with low iron & low vit D this may well be causing symptoms within itself. I will see a naturopath and bring my test results with me as well as the recommendations I have received here. It’s my time to now care for myself and my gorgeous son. I’m looking forward to a brighter future and remaining positive. I am delighted to have come across this site more than you guys probably realise. Here was me thinking I was going mad ( severe depression ) and it could well be from thyroid or lack of vitamins. But having had these symptoms twice before and going into clinical depression each time. I am willing to try anything to prevent depression again ( was so bad my thoughts were only of ending my life ) thankfully I have very much improved with mind state. I am a very confident person and very positive. For. My family and friends to see me in such a state they were 😨 shocked
