Hi I was wondering if you could help me, any advice would be great!

I'm 40 and female..I was diagnosed with adult adhd 18 months ago.Recently I notice that adhd and b12 deficiency/coeliac disease have a lot of the same symptoms. I have a history of irritable bowel issues, such as abominable pain, bloating, and also angular cheilitis. My brain is always very foggy, I get RLS, and recently I have been feeling extremely tired, dizzy, short of breath and generally weak. I took all this to my gp (complicated I know!) and asked to be tested for coeliac, and vitamin deficiencies. The results of my bloods have come back as 'normal' but I got a print out of them, and some seem quite low/high and have exclamation marks next to them - could anyone help me make sense of them? Also the lab technician has written in the notes at the top "NOT on vitamin D??? thyroid disease; known coeliac??? " What does that mean?!

Serum B12 446 ng/L (180 -900)

Serum Ferritin 15.9 ug/L (15 - 150)

Serum folate 6.61 ug/L (2.5 -19.5)

Serum TSH 2.88 mIU/L (0.27 -4.2)

Total 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D 59 mol/L <25 mol/L severe vit d deficiency, 25-50 nmol/L Deficient, 50 -75 Sub optimal, > 75 nmol/L Adequate

Haemoglobin A1C 41 mmol/L ( > 48 mmol/mol probable diabetes)

Total white cell count 4.97 10*9/L (4.0 -11.0)

RBC 4.29 10*12/L (3.80 -5.30)

Haemoglobin estimation 133 g/L (120-150)

Haematocrit .406 L/L (0.37 -0.45)

MCV 94.6 fL (83 - 100)

MCH 31 pg (27.0 - 32.0)

MCHC 328 g/L (310 -350)

Platelet 326 10*9/L (150 -450)

Neutrophil 2.12 10*9/L (1.5 -8)

Lymphocyte 1.59 10*9/L (1.0 -4.0)

Monocyte 0.49 10*9/L (0.2 - 1.0)

Eosinophil 0.7 10*9/L (0.0 -0.5)

Basophil 0.07 10*9/L (0.0 - 0.2)

Sorry for the vast post, any help would be appreciated..

Sorry, but you're going to have to add the ranges to those results. Results without ranges are meaningless, because they vary from lab to lab. :)

So, what are you doing about your vit B12 deficiency? Because it's still too low. Your folate is a bit on the low side, too.

Your ferritin is very low, and your doctor should be investigating that, doing a full iron panel. And your vit D is also low - I think the technician was asking if you were on vit d because it was so low. And the Coeliac question was because your nutrients are too low, asking if Coeliac was the reason.

Your TSH is too high, on the verge of hypo. But, TSH doesn't tell the whole story. Your also need your FT4, FT3 and antibodies tested. Your symptoms are shouting hypo, but your TSH isn't backing that up. Could be due to Hashi's, or maybe you have Central Hypo. But, without testing the FT4/3, and antibodies, we just don't know.

Thanks Grey goose. I am due to see my gp next week, so will start supplementing myself then if they don't prescribe me anything.. I was just surprised that my results seemed to suggest that I would benefit from further testing and supplements, yet the doctor marked them as normal, and that there was no need for a follow up. My coeliac test came back normal too. I will bring up further testing of the FT4/3 and antibodies with doc next week. From my results do I look like I am iron deficient/anaemic even though they fall into 'normal' ranges? How do they work it out? My grandmother was unable to absorb B12, and developed Aplastic Anaemia, so i have my suspicions that something funny is going on! Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid I don't know much about iron/ferritin. Maybe SeasideSusie can help? But, with a low ferritin like that, there's something wrong.

Your doctor obviously doesn't know much about thyroid, so don't expect much from him. :)
