I have suspected that I have an underactive thyroid for some time but all tests by the doctor have been normal. In Nov 2016 I had a private test by Medichecks that showed I had a high thyroglobulin count. Just after this I was diagnosed with a tumour in my chest and told that something was wrong with my neck. I showed them the Medicheck results but the other stuff was obviously more important to them. Tumour (non cancerous) was removed from chest in Feb 2017 and eventually they removed a diseased parathyroid adenoma in Feb 2018 which weighed 1.1gm - a thousand times bigger than it should have been. At my follow up, I told them again about the high antibodies and asked if it could be Hashimoto's and the endocrine specialist said yes, but she didn't suggest another test so I had one done by Medichecks. The result is below. I would be really glad of some advice.
I did write to the endo and asked what I should do and this is what she said:
The positive antibody test indicates that you are at risk of your thyroid becoming underactive in the future (approx. risk is 10% chance per year). At present no treatment is required or even possible for this and as we discussed in clinic, I recommend that you have your thyroid function tested at your practice once per year.
I had my calcium measured immediately after op and a week before seeing the Endo and they were normal. Not on any other meds and have been told to have calcium checked once a year. She didn't actually tell me during our meeting to have thyroid checked once a year - she skipped over it. Vitamin D - not mentioned.
If GP unhelpful testing vitamins then can get done via Medichecks or Blue Horizon privately
In future, note all thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)
