Hashimoto's - do I need a thyroid ultrasound?

Hi,

I have Hashimoto's but never been offered an ultrasound of my thyroid. Do I need to have one? If so, what is the best way to ask a GP to have it done (my GP is not willing to test for T3 or T4 let alone an ultrasound!). Any advise will be appreciated.

Patrabu25,

Ultrasound scans aren't done as a matter of course. They're usually done if the doctor detects lumps or swelling which may need investigation. Unless you have lumps (nodules or cysts), goitre (swelling) or are having problems swallowing it's unlikely your GP will think it necessary to order an ultra sound scan.
