I am to have an ultrasound scan of my thyroid next month. Doc did not explain anything and not seeing her again till Nov. Any advice or info about the scan would be appreciated.

Thyroid ultrasound
Caze, the technician will just run a little machine over your throat to scan your thyroid. You'll be lying down with your throat thrust upward. It's not uncomfortable or painful and only takes a few minutes.
The scan will measure the size of your thyroid, show whether the texture is smooth or rough, measure the size of any nodules/goiter, show their proximity to other organs or if further investigation is required.
The technician may not be able to discuss the results of the scan with you as it may need interpretation which will be sent to your GP.
Hi Caze,
It is a simple business. They put a jelly on first which is feels cool the actual exam is just as Clutter says.
The consultant did mine and told me straight away that it had completely shrivelled up and was very small but there was definitely no sign of cancer (my mum and sister both had cancer in theirs).
I took my thyroid meds as normal, but if they are doing a blood test as well for thyroid function it is best not to take your meds that morning until after the bloods have been drawn.
I hope it all goes fine for you.
Many thanks - seems straightforward. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos 20 yrs ago and this is the first scan I've had. So will be interested to get the rslts.
I paid for a private test after diagnosis positive for TPO antibodies. Operator said my thyroid was severely atrophied. I had been experiencing discomfort around my neck in the area around my thyroid and it still bothers me on and off. I received all the scan photos after the radiologist had looked at them. I then googled "photos of thyroid" That was an interesting exercise as I could see that my thyroid was very small. no obvious cysts. The procedure was as described by others. Hope all goes well.
Many Thks
I may have to wait till Nov fr rslts (next appt) as its NHS but it will be interesting to see what 20 yrs of hashis has done to my thyroid.
