I have not been diagnosed or on thyroid meds until now. GP I saw today says I have underactive thyroid gland and Hashimotos and started on 25mcg levothyroxine with a retest in 6-8 weeks from now. Prescribed iron tablets to take 3 times a day since complete blood count showed anaemia and 5mg folic acid to take once a day and given loading B12 injection, also tested for pernicious anaemia but GP told me not to start folic acid until result of pernicious anaemia coms back. Also given loading dose of vitamin D hope this is ok thank you

TSH 103.5 (0.2 - 4.2)

Free T4 9.8 (12 - 22)

Free T3 3.2 (3.1 - 6.8)

Ferritin 15 (30 - 400)

Folate 3.0 (4.6 - 18.7)

Vitamin B12 144 (180 - 900)

Vitamin D 19.3 (<25 severe vitamin D deficiency. Patient may need pharmacological preparations)

Edit: I am 28 years old and female, no idea if the dose I have been started on is correct

25 mcg of Levo seems a low start dose considering your TSH and other results. I was started on 50 mcg with TSH of 9.4 but I suppose they took your age and general health into account.

I am 28 years old, what should they have started me on?

I have seen people say 50-100 mcg with no health issues. 25 mcg I thought was a starter dose for the elderly or people with heart conditions. I'm sure people more knowledgeable then me will answer.

As your vitamin levels are very low probably GP wanted to start thyroxine cautiously

GP seems very knowledgeable about vitamin supplements which makes a great positive change.

Always take your thyroxine on an empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after. Many take on waking, some find taking at bedtime more convenient. It may also work better, but some try it and don't like it

When you go for next blood test, get it as early as possible in morning and fasting. Don't take your Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after.

Not what you're looking for?
