Hi all, I'm on eltroxin 50mg/ daily and was wondering if I could ask my doc for an increase in dose as im so fatigued! Other symptoms have cleared up but not this one..

My tsh level was 91.40

My t4 or t3 (can't honestly remember) was 2.1 (normal range 12.2- 22)

Louiseb17,

Your GP started you on a very low dose, 100mcg might have been more appropriate. cks.nice.org.uk/hypothyroid...

You could ask for a dose increase now because it is unlikely 50mcg will be sufficient to raise FT4 into mid-range and bring TSH down <1.0.

It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it starts working and it will take up to six weeks to feel the full impact of the 50mcg dose. Even once you are optimally dosed symptoms may lag behind good biochemistry by several months.

For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements, magnesium and oestrogen.

You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine or after any dose adjustment. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.

Louiseb17,

Write a new post for them as updates are easily missed.
