Help! I have no idea what these test results mean.

I've just received my blood tests back and I'm not sure what they mean.

Me Normal Ranges

TSH 0.82 mU/L 0.30-4.20mU/L

FreeT4 17pmol/L 12-22pmol/L

FreeT3 3.8pmol/L 3.1-6.8pmol/L

D3 22nmol/L <25 deficient

B12 316ng/L 160-925ng/L

Serum folate 3.5ug/L 3.9-26.8

Serum iron 19.9umol/L 11-36

Serum TIBC 43.4umol/L 53-85

Serum ferritin 74ug/L 40-250

Transferrin saturation index. 45.9%

Normal range 20-40%

I've been told D3 at 22 is fine even though it clearly says below 25 is deficient.

Serum folate, serum TIBC and transferrin saturation were all in red but it doesn't say why.

Any help is much appreciated.

Sja11,

TSH 0.82 and FT4 17.0 indicate you are adequately dosed on Levothyroxine. FT3 is low in range which indicates you aren't converting T4 to T3 very well. Correcting vitamin D deficiency can help improve T4 to T3 conversion.

Vitamin D 22 is deficient. Your GP should prescribe D3 replacement but is obviously very ignorant if s/he thinks 22 is fine. You can buy D3 without prescription and softgel capsules are probably better than tablets. I recommend 10,000iu D3 daily for 2 months and then reduce to 5,000iu daily and retest in 5-6 months. Take vitD 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

Folate is flagged red because it is deficient. My GP prescribed 5mg folic acid for a couple of months to correct folate deficiency but you can buy 400-800mcg folic acid or methylfolate without prescription.

B12 is sub optimal. Optimal is around top of range. I would supplement 1,000mcg methylcobalamin with a B Complex vitamin.

TIBC was flagged red because it is below range and transferrin was flagged because it is over range. labtestsonline.org.uk/under...

Echo Clutters words of wisdom. I got 5 mg folate after the first lot just brought me into range from a well known shopping site named after a river. Worth a look to see if they still do it.
