I'm looking into buying some supplements like vitamin b, zinc, iron vitamin c.

Can anyone let me know which ones are the best and how much dosage a day is relevant.

I haven't had my vitamins levels checked just tsh and t4. Would really like to start bettering my health and hair quality.

Kingyl,

Have ferrtin, vitamin D, B12 and folate tested before you supplement iron, D3, B12 or folic acid. It's fine to supplement zinc and vitamin C without testing.

If you are supplementing zinc add magnesium as they are synergistic. Take zinc and magnesium 2 hours away from Levothyroxine.

4 hours for magnesium. :)

kingyl There really is no point in just buying vitamins, you need to know if you are deficient in any, what your levels are, and supplement accordingly. Vit C is about the only one you could take without testing.

Iron - too much iron is as bad as too little, so you need to know what your level is.

B12 - If you're already at the top of the range why spend money just to pee excess B12 away?

We usually suggest members get the following tested:

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin

You can get these through Blue Horizon or Medichecks - check both to see what the prices are. You may want to check minerals as well such as zinc, cooper, magnesium, selenium, but they're not normally suggested

Stay away from 'multi' formulas as they contain too little of anything, and usually the wrong forms of the vitamin or mineral, to do any good. Also avoid cheap supermarket/Boots/Holland & Barrett brands as they often contain cheap and the wrong form of ingredients.

When you have the test results, make a new thread and members can suggest supplements and doses for any deficiencies, along with good brands.

I've just sent off for thyroid plus 11 test via blue horizons indo believe this test will check all of the named vitamins above.

I have terrible tingly hands when I wake up.it drives me crazy, I'm wondering if I'm lacking in something.

Yes, the Plus 11 covers those :)

Tingling may be low B12.

I just rang the Dr to confirm ranges of my tsh test and to check if they checked for iron.

My tsh was 4.4 range 0.30 4.40 and t4 was 11.7 range 9-19.

My ferritin in April was 27 range 15 -300 so this sounds pretty low to me.

kingyl Your doctor should retest 6-8 weeks after starting your levo and increase your dose, then retest every 6-8 weeks with dose increases until you reach the dose needed for your symptoms to abate and you feel well. The aim of a treated hypo patient is for TSH to be 1 or below or wherever it is needed for FT4 and FT3 to be in the upper part of their respective reference ranges if that is where you find well.

Your iron is dreadfully low and thyroid hormone can't work properly unless it is a minimum of 70, preferably half way through range. Ask your GP for iron supplements, if he won't give you any then buy Ferrous Fumarate from Amazon and take one tablet twice a day with 1000mg Vit C with each tablet to aid absorption and help prevent constipation. Take iron 4 hours away from levo. You will need ferritin retested when you have finished the packet (usually 84 tablets). Another good way to raise ferritin is to eat liver once a week.
