Magnesium for help with sleep.

sophiethecat2003 profile image

Hi,

I have been taking Thyroxine for over 20 years. I take 150 mg of Levothyroxine, 40mcg of Liothyronine.

Vitamin D 20mg and Citalopram 20mg for my current depression.

I am struggling to sleep and it has been going on for a few months.

I am having to resort to prescribed sleeping tablets. Not ideal!

I have tried most over the counter alternatives, and have read an article about Magnesium being helpful for insomnia.

Anyone any experience of this? Anyone know if there are any contraindications regarding any of my meds?

Thanks

Best wishes

Research magnesium citrate...there is so much evidence out there that will help you. There is a doctor called Carole Dean... And another called Mark Sircus, both experts on how the body needs this important mineral.

I take 200-400mg to help me, it is a great muscle relaxant and aids in many bodily processes. I also bathe in it too. I use magnesium flakes in the bath and also magnesium oil on the skin for aching joints and muscles ...look up the firm 'Better You' ... A lot cheaper on Amazon. I use their vitaminD spray and B12 spray both under the tongue.

Best wishes,

BB

Reading around it is best to take your thyroxine at least 4 hours before/after your magnesium as it's can affect the absorption.

I take my thyroxine in the morning, and then my Vit D, magnesium and vitamin K in the evening. Definitely helps me sleep, but you have to build up the magnesium as it's a natural laxative ;)

I take Nature Calm (amazon.co.uk/Natural-Calm-S...

Hope that helps!

Hi Sophie,

I take mag citrate when I'm having problems with sleep (I can lay there for hours before nodding off). I find it takes a couple of days to work, then I can take it for maybe a week while I get back on track, then it starts to give me almost a 'hangover' feeling the next morning, so I ease off it again. The spray mentioned by BB works more quickly and is good, but can feel a bit uncomfortable on the skin. I've also found that calcium/mag together works well, but I'm never sure if we should take calcium supps assuming we get enough from diet (I probably do). I hope you find some relief, I certainly sympathise.

If you feel alert and wakeful at bedtime then you are probably taking too much thyroid hormone. Otherwise magnesium is good to supplement as most people don't get enough, it's found in green vegetables, tomatoes and wholegrains. There's no problem with taking magnesium citrate as long as you take it a couple of hours away from thyroid medication as it could impair absorption a little.

I have passed info on re- Magnesium. Although it is aimed at those who suffer from migraine, ( I am one), I found it interesting. Please check Migraine Trust site. They provide leaflets that might be useful. Look for "Supplements and Herbs for Migraine - The Evidence".

Magnesium L'Threonate does it for me - mostly. Magmind from Jarrow seems good (but pricey)

Hi dillydally, have you found one that doesn't feel greasy / itchy? And how much do you use, your whole rda or just part? Thanks, Emma x

yes I do find it greasy and itchy, I use 300mg 30 minutes before bed. the tingling has stopped. I always put some on the soles of my feet because it is absorbed really well from there. dilly x
