New diagnosis of IBD

Hi all,

I was told I had IBS and I have been back and forth with the doctors for a few years now. I’ve been again recently and the Dr said that tests had come back abnormal and that we were actually looking at IBD. She said the referral time is unfortunately quite long but I’m now going to be seen by gastro at the hospital for further tests to confirm what sort of IBD I may have. Has anyone else had a change of diagnosis, the dr said I might be looking at crohns or some form of colitis. Just looking for a bit of advice or if anyone else has been through the same thing. It’s just quite a shock to be told after always being told “it’s just IBS” (which is awful on its own!!)

It depends on what basis your GP has made this assessment. If they are saying this since you now have elevated calprotectin levels, this doesn't necessarily mean that you have IBD. If just means that you need referral for colonoscopy to check out what is going on. Statistically, even with elevated calprotectin levels, the diagnosis is more likely to come back as IBS, but best to get it checked out. I had high calprotectin and ended up being told that my colon was healthy and it was still IBS. High calprotectin can also be caused by other things such as diet. For instance, a high protein, low carbohydrate/fibre diet can cause increased calprotectin levels. This is because such a diet doesn't feed the microbiome and a healthy microbiome plays a big part in controlling inflammation in the body (which can lead to disease). Calprotectin is a marker of this inflammation.
