imodium and buscopan

hey guys just wanted some general advice on taking imodium as well as buscopan? Imodium for the diarrhea and then buscopan for the cramps? (I am also on Amitriptyline 10mg) would all these together be too much? I seem to manage the diarrhea but recently I am getting more cramps too which don’t subside. Any advice is very much appreciated :)

I usually take half a loperamide tablet ie 1mg. If I take 2mg I end up with pain later in the day. The half dose is enough for me. If doesn't stop bowel movements but it slows everything down and makes things more manageable

hi

I take a 10mg amiltriptaline tablet and break it in half so I’m taking 5mg every evening. This eases a lot of pain in my bowel and also some joint pain I have. It is known to help with bowel issues but can slow the bowel a bit too much. Therefore my gastroenterologist advices a sachet of fibrogel that I drink each night. I also take 15mg of lansoperazole each morning as I have a hiatus hernia. All this seems to work really well. Hope that helps

I always consult the British National Formulary (bnf.nice.org.uk) for guidance on taking medications. There is no interactions with Imodium (loperamide), but amitriptyline and Buscopan (hyoscine) together can have antimuscarinic effects; this is not a serious interaction amounting, in the most part, to getting a dry mouth.

I used to use Imodium several times a day along with Buscopan and Mebeverine 3 times a day, and I had no problems over many years. If you're having a lot of regular serious pain and have persistent diarrhoea though, may I make a suggestion which has helped me?

Ask your GP if s/he would consider prescribing Nefopam for you. It's a pain killer which works entirely differently to normal painkillers (you can Google it, of course) and I was prescribed it for a completely separate problem. Imagine my delight when I discovered it had the effect of stopping the genuinely life-altering diarrhoea problem I'd been plagued by for years. It has also reduced my IBS attacks dramatically, to the point that I only get them when I'm under a huge amount of stress.

(At that point nothing but a general anaesthetic would stop the pain!)

I amn't sure if there is any medical literature documenting these results, so I suppose it's an outside possibility that it only works that way for me - but I doubt it. I'd reckon it'd be worth your while asking.

Good luck!

Hi, sounds very familiar. Buscopan does ease cramps to a manageable level but I'm also taking Codine as well. I'd recommend the Buscopan over anything else I've tried. Best of luck 🤞

I take one or two Loperamide or either Imodium for diahorrors and also take Buscopan which I find is a great help for the cramps.

Both my pharmacist and GP said loperamide is often used to treat IBS -I have used loperamide and amytriptaline together with no issues. I found buscopan did nothing at all for me, so gave up its use decades ago. I found better to focus on LOW FODMAP diet (see Monash Uni app) and by cutting out fresh milk and reducing wheat and oats a lot of the bloating and therefore a lot of the cramps eased. But my IBS symptoms were less 'crampy' generally sounding than yours. My issues were bloating and upset stomach mostly and still are despite all my efforts.

Also try peppermint capsules and peppermint tea - that can really help with cramps and bloating - and cut down on caffeine, sweets with artificial sweeteners in, all that sort of thing. I found diet makes a difference but it's only part of the equation.

I was told by the pharmacy when I was buying my Imodium instance that the Imodium plus is better as it sorts out cramps & bloating

Hi i take the same things as you and i have all the symptoms you have. Ive taken 20 mg of amitriptyline they are all ok. But years ago i was watching Dr Chris on this morning the TV Show. He suggested taking Symprove its a drink you take every morning before food. So i bought it snd it was good. When i felt better after taking it a few months i stopped. Its not cheap you get 4 bottles for £49.00 which is a months supply. But my IBS over a few months started up again, constipation and diarrhea. Then i remembered Symprove, i ordered a months supply and have taken two bottles. I cant tell you how much better i feel, im going to the toilet regularly. I feel mentally and so much better. So i will get more of it it makes your stomach easier and at ease. Dont know if that will help, but i think its worth a try. Take care
